{"id":1483863,"date":"2024-08-15T16:45:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-15T20:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1483863"},"modified":"2024-08-15T16:45:00","modified_gmt":"2024-08-15T20:45:00","slug":"cambridge-to-fully-fund-palestinian-scholars-students-in-deal-to-end-occupation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/cambridge-to-fully-fund-palestinian-scholars-students-in-deal-to-end-occupation\/1483863\/","title":{"rendered":"Cambridge To Fully Fund Palestinian Scholars, Students In Deal To End Occupation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">Cambridge To Fully Fund Palestinian Scholars, Students In Deal To End Occupation<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/cambridge-to-fully-fund-palestinian-scholars-students-in-deal-to-end-occupation\"><em>Authored by Dominic Vogelbacher via The College Fix,<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>University of Cambridge leaders have agreed to a list of concessions to convince pro-Palestinian demonstrators to end a three-month-old encampment set up at a high-profile zone along the prestigious British institution, including a pledge to fully fund Palestinian scholars and students.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2024-08-15_09-24-49.jpg?itok=-bae2qve\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The student organization\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/cambridgeforpalestine\/\">Cambridge for Palestine<\/a>\u00a0has occupied King\u2019s Parade with a large encampment since May 6. King\u2019s Parade is a highly touristic area with massive foot traffic in front of the historic King\u2019s College gates and chapel, built in 1446. On the other side of the street is the Corpus Clock, one of Cambridge\u2019s famous tourist attractions.<\/p>\n<p>To end the occupation, the university recently committed to giving Palestinians undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships, fully funded residential placements for visiting doctoral students and academics, clinical placements for med students, and grants for researchers from Palestinian regions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition, the Institute for Continuing Education has recently offered places to Palestinian students to attend the University of Cambridge\u2019s International Summer Programme free of charge,\u201d the university stated in its Aug. 1\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cam.ac.uk\/notices\/news\/upholding-our-values-responding-to-calls-from-our-university-community\">announcement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Cambridge also pledged to submit its full application next month to become a so-called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/universities.cityofsanctuary.org\/\">University of Sanctuary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cWe share the horror of our students at the loss of life, and the appalling destruction of education institutions and infrastructure in Gaza,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> the university stated.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cWe are \u2026 committing our own networks and resources to ensure that these processes reflect the needs of the Palestinian people.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The encampment included about 30 tents and pavilions, with large banners placed on King\u2019s College and signs lining the sidewalk. <strong>The banners displayed slogans such as \u201cCambridge Jews For Justice in Palestine\u201d and \u201cMoney for Education, Not War + Occupation.\u201d Several posters featured lists of demands and community guidelines.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The community guidelines board included a no-tolerance policy for Islamophobia, ableism, transphobia, racism, and misogyny, as well as the slogan: \u201cFrom the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.\u201d The sign also asserted that both Britain and Cambridge University are not simply complicit, but \u201cknowing benefactors and partners in the genocide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The group initially stated it would not end the encampment until Cambridge agreed to divest all of its business ties with pro-Israel companies and invest in Palestinian students, academics, and causes \u2014 including becoming a University of Sanctuary.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The student activists argued in statements that some companies Cambridge invests in are \u201ccomplicit in the ongoing ethnic cleansing of Palestine,\u201d including Barclays, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, General Dynamics, Caterpillar, and Rolls Royce.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2024-08-15_09-25-54.jpg?itok=VQT-FfEr\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>On June 8, over a month after the encampment was formed, the university created a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cam.ac.uk\/notices\/news\/university-humanitarian-response-fund\">Humanitarian Response Fund<\/a>\u00a0and allocated $128,000 in initial funding to help students affected by the \u201cconflict or crisis.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Aug. 1, Cambridge University announced its concessions, noting campus leaders \u201chave agreed to explore\u201d the demands to change university policy, but the proposed actions are \u201ccontingent on the encampment closing down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The proposed actions include reviewing their \u201capproach to responsible investment\u201d and \u201cacademic and industry research ties and collaborations including those falling within the arms\/defense category.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Campus leaders have invited a proposed student task force to join the \u201cworking group\u201d that will \u201cmake recommendations to subsequent meetings of\u2026 governance committees that oversee policies\u201d that are relevant to the students\u2019 demands.<\/p>\n<p>In their Instagram\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C9z0VsXoc1R\/?img_index=1\">response<\/a>, Cambridge for Palestine stated while the university\u2019s statement was a \u201clong-overdue step toward building an academic institution that has no ties to genocide,\u201d the commitments are \u201cinsufficient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The organization wants a \u201ccomprehensive disclosure and divestment effort\u201d and is \u201cappalled\u201d that the word \u201cgenocide\u201d was not used in the statement.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the same post, Cambridge for Palestine stated the encampment on King\u2019s Parade is slated to close sometime in mid-August.
