San Francisco City Attorney Sues Sites That “Undress” Women With AI<\/span><\/p>\n

San Francisco\u2019s City Attorney has filed a lawsuit against the owners of 16 websites that have allowed users to \u201cnudify\u201d women and young girls using AI.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The office of San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu on Aug. 15\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0he was suing the owners of 16 of the \u201cmost-visited websites\u201d that allow users to \u201cundress\u201d people in a photo to make \u201cnonconsensual nude images of women and girls.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

A redacted version of the suit\u00a0filed<\/a>\u00a0in the city\u2019s Superior Court alleges the site owners include individuals and companies from Los Angeles, New Mexico,\u00a0the United Kingdom<\/a>\u00a0and Estonia who have violated California and United States laws on deepfake porn, revenge porn and child sexual abuse material.<\/p>\n

The websites are far from unknown, either. The complaint claims that they have racked up\u00a0200 million visits<\/a>\u00a0in just the first half of the year.<\/strong><\/p>\n

One website boasted that it allows its users to \u201csee anyone naked.\u201d <\/strong>Another says, \u201cImagine wasting time taking her out on dates when you can just use [the website] to get her nudes,\u201d according to the complaint.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0AI models<\/a>\u00a0used by the sites are trained on images of porn and child sexual abuse material, Chiu\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n

Essentially, someone can upload a picture of their target to\u00a0generate a realistic<\/a>, pornographic version of them. Some sites limit their generations to adults only, but others even allow images of children to be created.<\/p>\n

Chiu\u2019s office said the images are \u201cvirtually indistinguishable\u201d from the real thing and have been used to \u201cextort, bully, threaten, and humiliate women and girls,\u201d many of which have\u00a0no ability to control<\/a>\u00a0the fake images once they\u2019ve been created.<\/p>\n

In February, AI-generated nude images of 16 eighth-grade students \u2014 who are typically 13 to 14 years old \u2014 were shared around by students at a California middle school, it said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In June, ABC News\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0Victoria Police arrested a teenager for allegedly circulating 50 images of grade nine to 12 students who attended a school outside Melbourne, Australia.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis investigation has taken us to the darkest corners of the internet, and I am absolutely horrified for the women and girls who have had to endure this exploitation,\u201d said Chiu.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWe all need to do our part to crack down on bad actors using AI to exploit and abuse real people, including children,\u201d he added.<\/em><\/p>\n

Chiu said that AI has \u201cenormous promise,\u201d but there are criminals that are exploiting the technology, adding, \u201cWe have to be very clear that this is not innovation \u2014 this is sexual abuse.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
