was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/library\/publications\/2023\/demo\/p60-280.html\">11.5%<\/a>\u00a0with a total of 37.9 million people in poverty. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This map, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visualcapitalist.com\/mapped-poverty-rates-by-u-s-state\/\">via Visual Capitalist&#8217;s Kayla Zhu, <\/a>visualizes the three-year average of poverty rates by U.S. state from 2020 to 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The poverty rates are calculated using the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irp.wisc.edu\/resources\/how-is-poverty-measured\/#:~:text=The%20Census%20Bureau%20determines%20poverty,and%20adjusted%20for%20family%20size.\">official poverty measure<\/a>, which defines poverty by comparing the pre-tax annual income to a specific national threshold adjusted for family size.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/Poverty-by-State_website_Aug16.jpg?itok=FYo6AStd\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>The figures come from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/content\/dam\/Census\/library\/publications\/2023\/demo\/p60-280.pdf\">U.S. Census Bureau<\/a>\u00a0and are updated as of September 2023.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Southern U.S. Generally More Poor<\/h2>\n<p><strong>U.S. poverty rates were relatively higher in the South.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many of the states with the highest poverty rates, including New Mexico (18.2%), Mississippi (17.8%), Louisiana (16.9%), Arkansas (15.9%), and Kentucky (15.8%), are characterized by large rural areas which are historically poorer than urban areas.<\/p>\n<p>State<br href=\"https:\/\/www.visualcapitalist.com\/u-s-states-by-lowest-real-gdp-growth\/\">slow economic growth<\/a>\u00a0and lower personal income levels.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epi.org\/publication\/rooted-in-racism\/#epi-toc-9\">Nine<\/a>\u00a0of the 15 states with the lowest per-worker GDP are in the South, and states like Kentucky and Arkansas are among the states with the lowest\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epi.org\/publication\/rooted-in-racism\/#epi-toc-9\">prime-age employment-to-population<\/a>\u00a0ratio.<\/p>\n<p>On the county level, about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/poor-men-south-of-richmond-why-much-of-the-rural-south-is-in-economic-crisis-213820\">one in five<\/a>\u00a0counties in the South experienced \u201cpersistent poverty,\u201d maintaining a poverty rate above 20% for three decades. <strong>Over 80% of all persistently poor counties in the U.S. are located in the
