University Of Nebraska-Lincoln Shuts Down DEI Office, Eliminates $320k Vice Chancellor Position<\/span><\/p>\n

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln<\/a> has closed its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion office and eliminated its vice chancellor position.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

In an email, UNL Chancellor Rodney Bennett said to the campus community on Tuesday that the Office of Diversity and Inclusion will be closing, according to the\u00a0Lincoln Journal-Star<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The change also means the university\u2019s vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion position, held by Marco Barker, will be eliminated come December. Including benefits, Barker\u2019s salary is almost $320,000.<\/strong><\/p>\n

$750,000 will also go back into the university\u2019s overall budget, which was previously allocated for the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.<\/p>\n

\u201dI fully grasp the weight of this decision and its implications,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> Bennett wrote, adding that \u201ca centralized approach to this work is no longer right for our institution.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Bennett told the Lincoln Journal-Star<\/em> that a recent trend of establishing DEI offices at colleges and universities has \u201cshifted.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201dI think during that period, perhaps, a goal was met and those offices have served the campuses well,\u201d Bennett said.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion\u2019s five employees can apply for other positions across the university.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
