California Colludes With Big-Tech To Wield Control Over Local Newsrooms, Incorporate AI<\/span><\/p>\n

Remember when the government colluded with Big Tech to censor news detrimental to Democrats\u00a0ahead of the 2020 election? Well, they\u2019re at it again, this time openly bragging about their latest collusion.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

California has announced the first-ever \u201cpartnership\u201d with\u00a0Google<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Meta<\/a>\u00a0(Facebook\u2019s parent company) to fund local newsrooms and launch a government artificial intelligence program.\u00a0<\/p>\n

With a price tag of $250 million\u2014$175 million from taxpayers and $55 million from Google\u2014this program will provide direct financial support to newsrooms.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The deal\u00a0emerged as a settlement<\/a>\u00a0between Big Tech and the state government after California Democrats threatened to impose fees on platforms that profit from news content.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The multi-million-dollar fund will be managed by the UC Berkeley School of Journalism and disbursed to newsrooms over five years, with annual approvals required.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Critics have warned about the dangers of government and social media giants sponsoring the news.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is beyond Orwellian,\u201d<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0Dan Schneider, the vice president of a free speech department at the\u00a0Media Research Center<\/a>\u00a0(MRC).<\/p>\n

\u201cWith a tiny portion of its annual revenue, Google is going to use every reporter and news outlet to remake society in its own warped image.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

MRC has released\u00a0several reports<\/a>\u00a0accusing\u00a0Google of interfering<\/a>\u00a0in the 2024 election by burying Republican campaign websites while promoting those of Democrats.<\/p>\n

The Media Guild of the West echoed Schneider\u2019s concerns, stating, \u201cCalifornia\u2019s journalists and news workers oppose this disastrous deal with Google and condemn the news executives who consented to it in our names.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The union rebuked the newsrooms celebrating what it described as an \u201copaque deal\u201d involving taxpayer funds and \u201cminimal financial commitments from Google to return the wealth this monopoly has stolen from our newsrooms.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

In contrast, California Gov.\u00a0Gavin Newsom<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0hailed the deal as a \u201cmajor breakthrough\u201d to ensure the survival of newsrooms and bolster local journalism.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe deal not only provides funding to support hundreds of new journalists but helps rebuild a robust and dynamic California press corps for years to come, reinforcing the vital role of journalism in our democracy,\u201d he claimed.<\/em><\/p>\n

While Newsom lauded the agreement as a lifeline for journalism, it comes amid growing scrutiny of Big Tech\u2019s influence and manipulation of content.<\/p>\n

Google and Facebook are\u00a0currently under investigation<\/a>\u00a0by the House Oversight Committee for allegedly censoring searches and content related to an assassination attempt on President Donald Trump<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
