Boeing Starliner Spacecraft Returns To Earth Without Crew<\/span><\/p>\n

Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft\u00a0left the International Space Station (ISS) on Friday evening and\u00a0landed in White Sands, New Mexico, in the early\u00a0hours of Saturday,\u00a0without\u00a0astronauts Barry “Butch” Wilmore and Sunita “Suni” Williams.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Starliner autonomously undocked from the ISS\u00a0at 6:04 PM Friday, New York time.\u00a0Shortly after undocking, Starliner performed what is called the “breakout burn” to avoid an ISS collision.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

On August 24, NASA officials decided<\/a>\u00a0astronauts\u00a0Wilmore and\u00a0Williams would not return to Earth in Boeing’s\u00a0beleaguered\u00a0Starliner spacecraft following a series of unexpected engine failures and helium leaks that turned what was supposed to be a week-long mission into a flawed\u00a0three-month mission.<\/p>\n

Both\u00a0astronauts stranded on the ISS will return in\u00a0a SpaceX Crew Dragon\u00a0spacecraft<\/a> in February – extending a week-long mission on the ISS to eight months.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Steve Stich, NASA’s commercial crew program manager, called Starliner’s landing in\u00a0White Sands “a\u00a0bullseye landing,” adding,\u00a0“We’ve got some things we know we’ve got to work on.”<\/p>\n

For Boeing, this was the Starliner spacecraft’s first test flight, which ended in a series of failures and massive public embarrassment since Elon Musk’s SpaceX would rescue the stranded astronauts.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“We’re going to take our time to figure out what we need to do to go fly Starliner One right,” Stich said.<\/p>\n

Boeing is heading back to the drawing board on\u00a0Starliner, and as for\u00a0Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin\u2014who knows what’s going on there? The bottom line: SpaceX\u00a0still doesn’t have serious competition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
