{"id":1488563,"date":"2024-09-07T19:10:00","date_gmt":"2024-09-07T23:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1488563"},"modified":"2024-09-07T19:10:00","modified_gmt":"2024-09-07T23:10:00","slug":"plagiarism-is-plagiarism-says-scholar-whose-work-was-lifted-by-critical-race-theorist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/plagiarism-is-plagiarism-says-scholar-whose-work-was-lifted-by-critical-race-theorist\/1488563\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Plagiarism Is Plagiarism&#8221; Says Scholar Whose Work Was Lifted By Critical Race Theorist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">&#8220;Plagiarism Is Plagiarism&#8221; Says Scholar Whose Work Was Lifted By Critical Race Theorist<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p><em>By Ann Daily Moreno of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/plagiarism-is-plagiarism-says-scholar-whose-work-was-lifted-by-critical-race-theorist-robin-diangelo\/\">The College Fix<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A recent complaint filed with the University of Washington alleges that Professor Robin DiAngelo, a white critical race theorist and alumnus of the school, <strong>plagiarized minority scholars and others, largely within her dissertation to earn a PhD in philosophy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The 20-page <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/DiAngelo_Complaint.pdf\">complaint<\/a>, first <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/campus\/robin-diangelo-plagiarized-minority-scholars-complaint-alleges\/\">reported<\/a> by the <em>Washington Free Beacon<\/em>, outlines nearly a half-dozen scholars whose previous writings appear to have not been properly cited in DiAngelo\u2019s work \u2014 despite her saying it\u2019s vital to \u201calways cite and give credit to the work of BIPOC people who have informed your thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/white%20fragility.jpg?itok=J9UuSOI5\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Only one of the scholars whose work was allegedly plagiarized by DiAngelo responded to <em>The College Fix\u2019s<\/em> request for comment \u2014 University of Melbourne professorial fellow Bronwyn Davies \u2014 whose work with co-author Rom Harr\u00e9 has been found in a couple of sentences within DiAngelo\u2019s writing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlagiarism is plagiarism and it is not acceptable,\u201d Davies told <em>The College Fix<\/em> when reached for comment. \u201cBut in a thesis on Critical Race Theory, it would seem to be even more egregious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DiAngelo\u2019s 2004 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nas.org\/storage\/app\/media\/New%20Documents\/DiAngelo%20Dissertation%20-%202004.pdf\">dissertation<\/a> \u201cWhiteness in Racial Dialogue: A Discourse Analysis\u201d appears to lift two paragraphs from Northeastern University Asian-American Professor Thomas Nakayama, and his coauthor, Robert Krizek, without proper attribution, the <em>Beacon<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n<p>The complaint also \u201cdescribes dozens of cases in which DiAngelo, who rakes in almost $1 million a year in speaking fees, passed off the work of others as her own,\u201d it added, pointing out that although DiAngelo cited her sources in the bibliography, she did not give proper attribution for in text-citations, according to the complaint, filed anonymously.<\/p>\n<p>Davies describes herself as a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bronwyndavies.com.au\/about-bronwyn\/\">new materialist<\/a>,\u201d but said she is familiar with critical race theory and told <em>The Fix<\/em> she does not have \u201cany particular dispute\u201d with the ideology. She said it is \u201cinteresting\u201d how the work she was doing 30 years ago is currently being used by critical race theory scholars like DiAngelo.<\/p>\n<p>As for the sentences DiAngelo lifted, Davies told <em>The Fix<\/em>: \u201cI think this falls within any definition of plagiarism, which is a pretty serious [offense] according to the rules of most universities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever,\u201d she added, \u201cher failure to give proper attribution may not be intentional; it may be ignorance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I would like to say is that all academic work is in conversation, one way or another, with work that others have done or are doing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWeaving one\u2019s own words together with the words of another involves both acknowledging they are not your own words \u2026 while not interrupting the flow of whatever idea it is you are trying to express.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davies said she does not have an opinion about any consequences DiAngelo should face, saying it\u2019s up to the university.<\/p>\n<p>However, Davies also said there is \u201ca lot of trust\u201d in publishing one\u2019s ideas and she hopes that whoever reads her ideas will \u201cgain new insights and benefits in their own thinking and writing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAcademic publishing is a huge global conversation that is often exciting, and invariably stimulates the production of new ideas and new conversations,\u201d Davies told <em>The Fix<\/em>. \u201cIt makes me sad, and a little disappointed that, in this case, my place in the conversation has not been acknowledged\u2014but only a little.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davies also said that she \u201cwonders\u201d about DiAngelo\u2019s ethics since DiAngelo makes millions of dollars in events, but she is also \u201chappy\u201d her words could \u201cstill be helpful to the student in developing her own ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reached for comment by <em>The College Fix<\/em>, University of Washington spokesperson Dana Robinson Slote stated campus leaders \u201care committed to the integrity of research conducted at the University of Washington.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComplaints such as this are confidential under institutional policy and relevant federal regulations. Therefore, I cannot speak to or verify the accuracy of any purported complaint, or excerpt from a complaint, that has allegedly been submitted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Slote refers to the university\u2019s policies in University of Washington\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/admin\/rules\/policies\/PO\/EO61.html\">Executive Order 61<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Charleen Wilcox, spokesperson for the College of Education, where the alleged plagiarism took place and where DiAngelo currently serves as an affiliate associate professor, told<em> The College Fix<\/em> the school \u201cdoes not have any comment at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DiAngelo, who has not yet replied to requests for comment, is the author of <em>New York Times<\/em> bestseller \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beacon.org\/assets\/pdfs\/whitefragilityreadingguide.pdf\">White Fragility<\/a>,\u201d a book that DiAngelo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=45ey4jgoxeU\">says<\/a> was written to help people of color.<\/p>\n<p>DiAngelo has also been involved with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattle.gov\/civil-rights\">Seattle Office of Civil Rights<\/a>, appointed as a leader in the mayor\u2019s race and social justice initiative and has, in addition, reportedly made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-9749517\/An-anti-racist-author-Robin-DiAngelo-makes-728K-year-speaking-engagements.html\">nearly $1 million<\/a> per year from speaker fees and leading \u201canti-racism\u201d trainings, some of which can be found on her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.robindiangelo.com\/public-events\/\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Seattle Office of Civil Rights has not yet replied to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Stacey Lee, an Asian-American professor of education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has also been apparently plagiarized by DiAngelo in her dissertation.
