Like the Blob or the Thing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Censorship?<\/strong> We all know that\u2019s on the elite\u2019s shopping list.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Digital currencies? <\/strong>They\u2019re still going.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Digital ID?<\/strong> Absolutely on the cards.<\/p>\n<p>And we\u2019ll be returning to talk about all of them no doubt until they eats any more or we\u2019re finally shut down (whichever happens first)<\/p>\n<p><strong>But today we\u2019re talking about\u00a0<em>eating the bugs<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not just the bugs though \u2013 \u00a0\u00a0<em>goo too.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Everything in fact that academics and journalists have decided to group under the umbrella term \u201calternative protein\u201d in headlines like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/are-alternative-proteins-going-mainstream-this-multimillion-pound-new-project-hopes-so-13204117\">this one<\/a>, from Sky News:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Are alternative proteins going mainstream? This multimillion pound new project hopes so<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>This story is in response to the launch of the UK\u2019s new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/lab-grown-meat-centre-alternative-proteins-b2602849.html\">National Alternative Protein Innovation Centre<\/a>\u00a0(NAPIC), a \u00a338million research project co-founded with Imperial College London (of Covid modelling fame).<\/p>\n<p>Professor Karen Polizzi of Imperial\u2019s brand new \u201cBezos Centre for Sustainable Protein\u201d (yes,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thechemicalengineer.com\/news\/bezos-funds-us-30m-sustainable-protein-lab-as-imperial-engineers-seek-to-revolutionise-food-production\/\"><em>that<\/em>\u00a0Bezos<\/a>) described the new initiative thus:<\/p>\n<p>Transitioning to healthy, sustainable sources of protein is a pressing global challenge. The National Alternative Protein Innovation Centre will help facilitate this transition by supporting researchers and industry in all parts of the process from product design through to consumer acceptance. At Imperial, we will focus on developing economical, sustainable processes for producing newly discovered alternative proteins on a large scale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201calternative proteins\u201d that are the focus of this \u00a0research being\u2026<\/p>\n<p>edible proteins that are derived from sources other than animal agriculture: from plants such as cereals, legumes, tubers and nuts; fungi such as mushrooms; algae such as seaweed;\u00a0<strong>insects; proteins derived via lab-grown microbial cells or fermentation; and lab-grown meat<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like I said: \u00a0bugs and goo \u2013 oh and some plants too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What exactly is the appeal of the bugs and the goo \u00a0(and plants) as far as the overlords go?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a complex question, with a multi-faceted answer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part of me thinks they just like to see ordinary people humiliate themselves<\/strong> in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NwmwB-biQpc\">\u201cI think we could get them to brush their tongues\u201d<\/a>\u00a0model. But that\u2019s just a theory, we can expound upon it another time.<\/p>\n<p>Outside of sadism and other psycho-social motivations there are<strong> practical questions of profit and control.<\/strong> As we covered in our recent piece on\u00a0genetically modified\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/off-guardian.org\/2024\/08\/30\/gene-edited-vs-genetically-modified-whats-the-difference\/\">gene-<em>edited<\/em>\u00a0food<\/a>, intellectual property laws play a role.<\/p>\n<p>An egg is an egg. Beef is beef. You can\u2019t patent a cow or a chicken, and it\u2019s quite difficult to prevent people keeping their own animals.<\/p>\n<p>But when your product is a few thousand freeze-dried crickets ground into a powder (including their eyes, intestines and faeces), mixed with chemical preservatives, thickeners and artificial flavourings to mimic real meat\u2026<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>well, you can patent the hell out of that.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s part of the reason the edible insect market is expected to grow\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/edible-insects-market-poised-for-massive-growth-projected-to-reach-17-95-billion-by-2033-from-1-49-billion-in-2023--exclusive-report-by-meticulous-research-302236945.html\">to ten times its current size<\/a>\u00a0in the next decade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In one of those ever-so-timely coincidences, the announcement of the new research project has just so happened to accompany a full-court press on \u201calternative protein\u201d propaganda.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last week The Guardian ran a glossy\u00a0advertisement\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dumptheguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/article\/2024\/aug\/27\/you-dont-need-animals-make-real-meat-man-who-grows-chicken-lab\">interview with the CEO of Meatly<\/a>, the lab grown meat company, where he claimed\u00a0<em>\u201cCultivated meat is safer, kinder, more sustainable\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The very next day\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dumptheguardian.com\/business\/article\/2024\/aug\/28\/plant-based-meat-alternatives-environment-nutrition\">The Guardian (again) reported<\/a>\u00a0on a \u201cnew study\u201d that (shockingly) found\u00a0<em>\u201cPlant-based meat alternatives are eco-friendlier and mostly healthier\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Four days ago, another\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/plantbasednews.org\/news\/science\/peanut-shells-meat-alternatives\/\">new study<\/a>\u00a0found proteins extracted from peanut shells could be used to supplement animal proteins.<\/p>\n<p>Good Food Magazine thinks\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newfoodmagazine.com\/news\/242385\/mealworms-functional-food-protein\/\">eating mealworms can cure diabetes<\/a>. Medical journals are publishing pieces\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-medical.net\/news\/20240820\/Exploring-the-health-benefits-and-production-challenges-of-alternative-proteins.aspx\">\u201cinvestigating the health benefits of alternative proteins\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>MSN is reposting articles from the Metro\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/world\/lab-grown-meat-is-coming-here-s-why-you-might-have-no-choice-but-to-eat-it\/ss-AA1oNaqp?ocid=SNYDHP\">headlining<\/a>:\u00a0<em>\u201cLab-grown meat is coming. Here\u2019s why you might have no choice but to eat it\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Yahoo Finance\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uk.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/why-lab-grown-meat-win-135145451.html?guccounter=1\">tells us<\/a><strong>\u00a0<em>\u201cWhy Lab-grown meat is a win for the UK\u2019s investment industry\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s not just the UK. Obviously. It never is, just like prices don\u2019t change at<em>\u00a0just one<\/em>\u00a0Walmart and the menu doesn\u2019t change at\u00a0<em>just one<\/em>\u00a0MacDonald\u2019s. Because globalism is already a reality, and your \u201cnational government\u201d is just a \u00a0local branch of a multinational conglomerate.<\/p>\n<p>In the US,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.universityofcalifornia.edu\/news\/good-grub-why-you-should-consider-eating-bugs\">the University of California<\/a>\u00a0is being pretty straightforward:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Good grub \u2014 why you should consider eating bugs<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>While Finland\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solein.com\/\">\u201cSolein\u201d<\/a>\u00a0company, which makes bacteria pancakes out of \u201cair and sunlight\u201d, has been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodprocessing.com\/ingredients\/alternative-protein\/news\/55137089\/protein-from-almost-thin-air\">\u201cGenerally Recognised as Safe\u201d by the FDA<\/a>\u00a0(the next step, I suppose, would be being \u201cgenerally recognised as\u00a0<em>food<\/em>\u201c).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Australia\u2019s \u201cnext superfood\u201d is Hoppa,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.einnews.com\/pr_news\/739194354\/australia-s-next-superfood-the-rise-of-edible-insects-in-sustainable-eating\">a bag of powdered crickets<\/a>. <\/strong>Next month, Melbourne will be playing host to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodfrontier.org\/altproteins-conference\/\">AltProtein24<\/a>, a conference for the promotion of \u201calternative proteins\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Last week Singapore approved\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.positive.news\/society\/as-singapore-approves-16-types-of-insects-as-food-for-humans-theres-a-growing-buzz-around-the-sector\/\">16 different types of insects<\/a>\u00a0for human consumption. Singapore is also getting its own \u201cSustainable Protein Research Centre\u201d, again\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/articles\/bezos-earth-fund-establishes-sustainable-protein-center-in-singapore-0775c89b\">funded by huge donations from Jeff Bezos<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The silver lining here is that, despite all these efforts, there\u2019s a good possibility this will never work.
