X Complies With EU Data Laws, Stops AI Chatbot Data Collection<\/span><\/p>\n

The European Union\u2019s investigation into social media platform X has officially concluded after the platform agreed to meet the compliance requirements set by the European Data Protection Commission (DPC).<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

On Sept. 4, X\u00a0agreed<\/a>\u00a0to cease using personal data from users located in the EU and European Economic Area (EEA). Previously, X used this data to train its artificial intelligence chatbot Grok.\u00a0<\/p>\n

EU data erasure<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The court required that Twitter International, the company behind X\u2019s operations, permanently comply with the data collection requests.\u00a0<\/p>\n

X said it would erase previous data from May 7 to Aug. 1 and agreed not to collect any further data for the sake of developing, enhancing or training Grok.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The DPC filed the initial complaint, citing a risk to the \u201cfundamental rights and freedoms of individuals.\u201d According to the EU data watchdog, this was the first time it had had to take such action and invoke its powers under Section 134 of the 2018 Data Protection Act.<\/p>\n

DPC Commissioner Des Hogan said he \u201cwelcomed\u201d the outcome and that it protects the rights of EU and EEA citizens. When the complaint was initially filed, Hogan further commented on the DPC\u2019s role in citizen data protection:\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of our main roles as an independent regulator and rights-based organization is to ensure the best outcome for data subjects and today\u2019s developments will help us to continue protecting the rights and freedoms of X users across the EU and EEA.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThis action further demonstrates the DPC\u2019s commitment to taking appropriate action where necessary,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Prior to accepting the conditions, Twitter International rejected the DPC\u2019s allegations and claimed that it met all of the EU\u2019s General Data Protection Regulation requirements. The company even referred to the orders as \u201cdraconian\u201d and said they hinder crucial functions of the platform in the region.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, since X agreed to the measures, the case has been dismissed.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

X\u2019s global battles<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The case against the DPC is not the only battle X is currently engaged in. On Aug. 30, regulators in\u00a0Brazil suspended X in the country<\/a>\u00a0after Elon Musk, the platform\u2019s owner, refused to name a legal representative for the firm in Brazil.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Brazilian Supreme Court upheld the order on Sept. 2 in\u00a0a unanimous decision<\/a>\u00a0by five justices.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Musk has hinted to X users in Brazil that they should defy the judge\u2019s ruling against using VPNs to access the platform despite the fines that they could incur.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

He has also previously spoken out against Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes,\u00a0accusing<\/a>\u00a0him of being \u201cevil\u201d and a \u201cdictator\u201d for allegedly engaging in \u201cillegal political censorship\u201d on X.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
