Professor Warns Of “European Christian Imperialism” In Outer Space<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the sillier aspects of DEI\/critical theory is the erosion of reason and rationality<\/strong> in the cause of righting \u201coppression.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve seen this with the gender movement, in particular; less known is how it\u2019s creeping into hard sciences like astronomy.<\/strong><\/p>\n

For instance, remember last summer when an \u201cindigenous scholars\u201d group\u00a0warned<\/a>\u00a0that listening \u2014 yes, just\u00a0listening<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 for alien civilizations could be viewed as \u201ceavesdropping\u201d or \u201csurveillance\u201d (do we have the aliens\u2019 permission)?<\/p>\n

What about the Canadian government\u2019s efforts at \u201cdecolonizing light<\/a>\u201c<\/em><\/strong>? Or the Stanford University academic who claimed efforts to colonize Mars are \u201cpatriarchal<\/a>\u201d and \u201canother example of male entitlement\u201d<\/strong><\/em>? Etc. \u2026<\/p>\n

Now, Wesleyan University Dean of Social Sciences Mary-Jane Rubenstein, a \u201cphilosopher of science and religion\u201d (who\u2019s also affiliated with the school\u2019s Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program), says\u00a0she\u2019s noticed<\/a>\u00a0how \u201cmany of the factors that drove European Christian imperialism\u201d have been put to use in \u201chigh-speed, high-tech forms.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rubenstein wonders if \u201ccolonial practices\u201d like \u201cexploitation of environmental resources and the destruction of landscapes,\u201d all \u201cin the name of ideals such as destiny, civilization and the salvation of humanity,\u201d will be part of man\u2019s expansion into space.<\/p>\n

Of course, we\u2019re reasonably sure that, especially in our own solar system, there is\u00a0no<\/em>\u00a0life \u2014 not even microbes \u2014 about which to worry. Hence, what\u2019s the big deal if we help save Earth by exploiting Mars, Mercury, the asteroid belt, etc. for mineral and other resources?<\/p>\n

To her credit, Rubenstein notes that Mars Society President Robert Zubrin has made this exact case. In a\u00a02020 op-ed<\/a>, Zubrin ripped a \u201cmanifesto<\/a>\u201d from a NASA DEI \u2014 diversity, equity, and inclusion \u2014 group which had argued \u201cwe must actively work to prevent capitalist extraction on other worlds.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Such \u201cbrilliantly demonstrates how the ideologies responsible for the destruction of university liberal-arts education can be put to work to abort space exploration as well,\u201d Zubrin wrote.<\/p>\n

Zubrin noted that since the DEI group makes no sense on a\u00a0scientific<\/em>\u00a0basis, it has to resort to \u201ca combination of ancient pantheistic mysticism and postmodern socialist thought\u201d \u2014 such as stating that even though there is no evidence of even\u00a0microbes<\/em>\u00a0on planets such as Mars, \u201charming [them] would be as immoral as anything that was done to Native Americans or Africans.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Rubenstein\u00a0(pictured)\u00a0<\/em>says various Indigenous beliefs \u201cstand in stark contrast with many in the industry\u2019s insistence that space is empty and inanimate.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

These include a group of Australian natives who say their ancestors \u201cguide human life from their home in the galaxy\u201d (and that artificial satellites are a danger to this \u201crelationship\u201d), Inuit who claim their ancestors actually\u00a0live<\/em>\u00a0on \u201ccelestial bodies,\u201d and Navajo who hold Earth\u2019s moon as sacred.<\/p>\n

\u201cSecular space enthusiasts do not need to agree that outer space is populated, animate or sacred in order to treat it with the care and respect Indigenous communities are requesting from the industry,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> Rubenstein says.<\/p>\n

Indeed, in his review of Rubenstein\u2019s book \u201cAstrotopia:\u00a0The Dangerous Religion of the Corporate Space Race,\u201d\u00a0Vox.com<\/a>\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0Sigal Samuel\u00a0noted<\/a>\u00a0\u201cin fact, some believe these celestial bodies should have fundamental rights of their own.\u201d<\/p>\n

So \u2026 critical post-modernists would have humans prioritize\u00a0Natives\u2019<\/em>\u00a0beliefs in the exploration of (lifeless) space \u2026 over those of European Christians?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We should forego extracting precious minerals from asteroids, comets, and neighboring planets \u2026 because they all have some sort of \u201cpantheistic mystical\u201d Bill of Rights?<\/p>\n

Just something else to ponder the next time the Left tells you they\u2019re the \u201cparty of science.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
