CIA, MI6 Chiefs Praise Ukraine’s Kursk Invasion For Bringing War To ‘Ordinary Russians’<\/span><\/p>\n

CIA Director William Burns and Richard Moore, the head of the UK\u2019s MI6 foreign intelligence agency,\u00a0spoke at<\/a> an unprecedented joint public event<\/strong> in London on Saturday, where they praised Ukraine\u2019s invasion of Russia\u2019s Kursk Oblast.<\/p>\n

Moore said the Kursk invasion was “typically audacious and bold on the part of the Ukrainians, to try and change the game<\/strong>” and said it had “brought the war home to ordinary Russians.”<\/p>\n

Burns said the operation in Kursk was a “significant tactical achievement” that boosted morale in Ukraine<\/strong>. While the fighting continues in Kursk, Russian forces have been making more rapid gains in Ukraine\u2019s Donbas region since the invasion was launched.<\/p>\n

The US and its allies claim they weren\u2019t involved in the planning of the Kursk invasion, but a Ukrainian soldier said\u00a0Western intelligence was crucial for the attack.<\/a><\/p>\n

Ukrainian forces have been using\u00a0US<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0British weapons<\/a>\u00a0in the assault<\/strong>, marking a significant escalation of the proxy war.<\/p>\n

At the event, which was hosted by the\u00a0Financial Times<\/em>, Burns\u00a0downplayed concerns about potential Russian escalations<\/a>\u00a0in response to the Western support for Ukraine. Burns said the following:<\/p>\n

I think there was a moment in the fall of 2022 when there was a genuine risk of the potential use of tactical nuclear weapons<\/strong>. <\/em><\/p>\n

I have never thought, however, and this is the view of my agency, that we should be unnecessarily intimidated by that. Putin\u2019s a bully and he is going to continue to saber-rattle from time to time.<\/em><\/p>\n

And Burns acknowledged that despite the Kursk operation being an ‘achievement’ it has actually done little or nothing toe weaken President Putin’s power<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Burns described the Kursk offensive as a “significant tactical achievement” that has served to boost Ukrainian morale as well as expose some of the vulnerabilities of Putin\u2019s Russia and his military. Last year\u2019s short-lived insurrection carried out by former Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin also helped to dent this narrative<\/strong>, Burns said.<\/em><\/p>\n

The CIA chief does not, however, see Putin\u2019s grip on power weakening. “He does one thing really well, and that\u2019s repress people at home.”<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The event\u00a0marked the first time<\/a>\u00a0the heads of the CIA and MI6 had appeared in public together<\/strong>. Both spy agencies have been\u00a0deeply involved with Ukraine\u2019s intelligence agencies\u00a0<\/a>following the 2014 coup in Kyiv that ousted former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
