Professor: People’s “Street Race” Should Be Included In U.S. Census<\/span><\/p>\n

A sociology professor at the University of New Mexico believes \u201chow you believe others see you\u201d should be included in the United States Census.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Nancy L\u00f3pez, whose research interests include race, ethnicity, gender, inequality, and Latino\/a Studies, refers to this as a person\u2019s \u201cstreet race,\u201d according to the\u00a0UNM Newsroom<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Aspects such as hair, facial features, and skin color can lead people to believe a person is an ethnicity\/race the person actually is not, L\u00f3pez said.<\/p>\n

Latinos, in particular, can be the victims of anti-Asian hate or anti-blackness based on how they look to others.<\/p>\n

L\u00f3pez (pictured) <\/em>said adding \u201cstreet race\u201d to the Census can \u201cmake visible discrimination and equity that happens based on race as a visual status.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStreet race\u201d is not a novel concept, L\u00f3pez said, noting it\u2019s \u201cbeen built on decades of research\u201d and may go by terms such as \u201cfolk race or socially assigned, described race.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although the federal Office of Management and Budget has made ethnicity and race a \u201cco-equal\u201d category in federal agencies, L\u00f3pez said this doesn\u2019t mean they can\u2019t also ask about \u201cstreet race.\u201d<\/p>\n

The same goes for institutions such as schools and hospitals.<\/p>\n

[But] L\u00f3pez says when you\u2019re asking about race and ethnicity together, you don\u2019t know what you\u2019re measuring. She says in the end, we will no longer be collecting data on race, only ethnicity, referring to that as \u2018troubling.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI call it statistical gaslighting because here you are claiming that you\u2019re not making Hispanic a race, but you\u2019re asking about it with race, L\u00f3pez said. \u201cIf someone dares to mark more than one box then you\u2019re put into this amorphous box, \u2018two or more\u2019, which has no analytical value if you\u2019re trying to understand reeducations in poverty or housing segregation by race.\u201d \u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you care about knowing things like housing discrimination, employment discrimination, or\u00a0healthcare access, you need to add another question,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u201cInequities will remain invisible if you only ask how you identify and neglect to add that second question,\u00a0how you believe others see you.\u201d<\/p>\n

L\u00f3pez is the co-founder of UNM\u2019s Institute for the Study of \u201cRace\u201d & Social Justice, \u201crace\u201d being in quotes on purpose \u201cto underscore its nature as a socially constructed category of social status in particular historical contexts, rather than as a reified category that is essential or fixed.\u201d<\/p>\n

She\u2019s also author of the books \u201cQuantcrit: An Antiracist Quantitative Approach to Educational Inquiry\u201d and \u201cMapping \u201cRace\u201d: Critical Approaches to Health Disparities Research.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
