{"id":1488918,"date":"2024-09-10T01:45:00","date_gmt":"2024-09-10T05:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1488918"},"modified":"2024-09-10T01:45:00","modified_gmt":"2024-09-10T05:45:00","slug":"professor-peoples-street-race-should-be-included-in-u-s-census","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/professor-peoples-street-race-should-be-included-in-u-s-census\/1488918\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor: People&#8217;s &#8220;Street Race&#8221; Should Be Included In U.S. Census"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">Professor: People&#8217;s &#8220;Street Race&#8221; Should Be Included In U.S. Census<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p><em>Via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/professor-peoples-street-race-should-be-included-in-u-s-census\/\">The College Fix<\/a>,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>A sociology professor at the University of New Mexico believes \u201chow you believe others see you\u201d should be included in the United States Census.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/nancy-new-photo.jpg?itok=UmzwCdUl\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nancy L\u00f3pez, whose research interests include race, ethnicity, gender, inequality, and Latino\/a Studies, refers to this as a person\u2019s \u201cstreet race,\u201d according to the\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/news.unm.edu\/news\/what-is-street-race-and-why-a-unm-professor-believes-it-should-be-asked-on-the-census\">UNM Newsroom<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Aspects such as hair, facial features, and skin color can lead people to believe a person is an ethnicity\/race the person actually is not, L\u00f3pez said.<\/p>\n<p>Latinos, in particular, can be the victims of anti-Asian hate or anti-blackness based on how they look to others.<\/p>\n<p>L\u00f3pez <em>(pictured) <\/em>said adding \u201cstreet race\u201d to the Census can \u201cmake visible discrimination and equity that happens based on race as a visual status.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cStreet race\u201d is not a novel concept, L\u00f3pez said, noting it\u2019s \u201cbeen built on decades of research\u201d and may go by terms such as \u201cfolk race or socially assigned, described race.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although the federal Office of Management and Budget has made ethnicity and race a \u201cco-equal\u201d category in federal agencies, L\u00f3pez said this doesn\u2019t mean they can\u2019t also ask about \u201cstreet race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same goes for institutions such as schools and hospitals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.unm.edu\/news\/what-is-street-race-and-why-a-unm-professor-believes-it-should-be-asked-on-the-census\">From the article<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>[But] L\u00f3pez says when you\u2019re asking about race and ethnicity together, you don\u2019t know what you\u2019re measuring.
