Professor Sends His ‘What If Jan 6 Succeeded’ Comic-Book To All Pennsylvania High Schools<\/span><\/p>\n

The Harvard Law professor who\u00a0co-authored\u00a0a \u201cwhat if?\u201d-style graphic novel<\/a>\u00a0about the January 6 \u201cinsurrection\u201d succeeding is sending free copies to every public high school in Pennsylvania.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Alan Jenkins, formerly president of the Harvard \u201csocial justice communication lab\u201d Opportunity Agenda, and his co-author Gan Golan are giving out gratis copies of\u00a0 \u201c1\/6: A Graphic Novel\u201d in order \u201cto convey the risks facing American democracy,\u201d\u00a0The Philadelphia<\/em>\u00a0Inquirer<\/em><\/a>\u00a0reports.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe forces that led to that insurrection \u2026 the white supremacy, disinformation [\u2026] are all very still much with us,\u201d Jenkins said.<\/em><\/p>\n

He added that he hopes students will see January 6 as \u201cnot unlike the 9\/11 terrorist attacks.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jenkins\u00a0<\/em>said he chose Pennsylvania because it\u2019s faced a lot of book \u201cbans.\u201d He noted it\u2019s possible \u201c1\/6\u201d might get banned \u201cbut [he\u2019s] ready for that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe think the truth always is stronger than censorship,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> he added.<\/p>\n

But one may wonder how a completely fictitious tale of alternative history counts as \u201ctruth.\u201d Here\u2019s a sample from \u201c1\/6\u2019s\u201d first issue, according to the\u00a0Inquirer:<\/em><\/p>\n

[\u2026] a society controlled by armed militias who take over a TV network \u2014 declaring it to be \u201can enemy of freedom.\u201d At a \u201cpatriots parade,\u201d a speaker blasts the \u201cthugs and criminals from Black Lives Matter\u201d while adherents repeat white nationalist slogans, with the phrases \u201cBlood and Soil\u201d and \u201cI will not be replaced\u201d in word bubbles. Dissidents work covertly, avoiding the militias enforcing curfew while transporting Electoral College ballots \u2014 \u201cthe last evidence of our democracy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

And were there Confederate flags flying around DC on Jan. 6? Jenkins\u2019 book features it on top of the Capitol and Lincoln Memorial.<\/p>\n

In the story\u2019s second issue, \u201creaders are taken through events leading up to and including Jan. 6 <\/strong>\u2014 starting with the 2017 [Charlottesville] \u2018Unite the Right\u2019 rally.\u201d Jenkins\u2019 \u201ctruth\u201d includes the common \u2014 and devoid-of-context \u2014 Trump quote about \u201cfine people on both sides\u201d (Trump\u00a0specifically condemned<\/a>\u00a0the neo-Nazis and white nationalists at the rally).<\/p>\n

There\u2019s also the\u00a0missing-context<\/a>\u00a0phone calls to Georgia election officials in which Trump said \u201cfind 11,780 votes.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ironically, Jenkins\u00a0(pictured below)\u00a0<\/em>said he expects \u201cpushback\u201d regarding the comic as many Pennsylvania parents have accused schools of \u201cindoctrinating\u201d students.<\/p>\n

The state\u2019s high schools also will receive a supplementary \u201caction guide\u201d for \u201c1\/6\u201d which \u201clays out facts\u201d about the insurrection, election \u201cdeniers,\u201d increases in hate crimes, and legislators \u201cbanning\u201d books \u2014\u00a0 \u201ca hallmark of authoritarianism.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Philadelphia-area schools did not respond to\u00a0Inquirer<\/em>\u00a0queries about whether they would stock the book in their libraries or \u201chow they would use it.\u201d One district did note that \u201c1\/6\u201d would first have to be reviewed by \u201ca committee of librarians and administrators.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jenkins and Golan\u00a0previously sent<\/a>\u00a0150 copies to members of Congress who allegedly denied the 2020 election results.<\/p>\n

According to his faculty page, Jenkins teaches courses on race and the law, communication, and Supreme Court jurisprudence. Along with his law degree, Jenkins has an MA in media studies and a BA in psychology and social relations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
