essential to domestic and international politics and security.\u00a0<strong> For much of the Pax Americana, our government and intelligentsia have poured time, effort, and money into\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/why-politicians-dont-always-listen-to-political-scientists\/\">studying<\/a>\u00a0how to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilsoncenter.org\/blog-post\/the-cold-war-battle-for-hearts-and-minds\">persuade<\/a>\u00a0everyone from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/wonk\/wp\/2014\/09\/10\/study-politicians-can-change-hearts-and-minds-simply-by-stating-their-views\/\">allies<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20120501-building-the-like-me-weapon\">enemies<\/a>\u00a0and, conversely, how to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2006\/12\/18\/knowing-the-enemy\">counter<\/a>\u00a0an opponent\u2019s influence campaigns.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But something essential has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/public.substack.com\/p\/why-democrats-became-the-totalitarians?utm_source=%2Fsearch%2Fpopulism%2520censorship%2520trump&amp;utm_medium=reader2\">changed<\/a>\u00a0since the rise of President Donald Trump as a political force.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/608242_6.jpg?itok=GyqZDZwv\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>During the Cold War, President Dwight Eisenhower\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.presidency.ucsb.edu\/documents\/remarks-the-dartmouth-college-commencement-exercises-hanover-new-hampshire\">spoke up<\/a>\u00a0against censorship and for lay readers in the wake of an attempt by Senator Joseph McCarthy\u2019s henchmen to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/americanexperience\/films\/mccarthy\/#transcript\">eradicate communist books<\/a>\u00a0from libraries:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Don\u2019t join the book burners. \u00a0Don\u2019t think you are going to conceal faults by concealing evidence that they ever existed. \u00a0Don\u2019t be afraid to go in your library and read every book . . . .<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>How will we defeat communism unless we know what it is, and what it teaches, and why does it have such an appeal for men, why are so many people swearing allegiance to it? \u00a0. . .<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>And we have got to fight it with something better, not try to conceal the thinking of our own people. \u00a0They are part of America. \u00a0And even if they think ideas that are contrary to ours, their right to say them, their right to record them, and their right to have them at places where they are accessible to others is unquestioned, or it isn\u2019t America.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>These days, America\u2019s most educated have grown distrustful of non-experts and their ability to process\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dangerousspeech.org\/what-we-do\/\">dangerous ideas<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our elites have launched a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greenwald.substack.com\/p\/the-consortium-imposing-the-growing\">campaign<\/a>\u00a0to protect the undereducated from themselves.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The credentialed class pressures book retailers to stop selling \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/bostonreview.net\/articles\/yuliya-komska-fascism-translation\/\">uncritical<\/a>\u201d translations of sinister foreign texts, meaning those lacking an accepted authority\u2019s \u201csoberly critical framing, complete with detailed footnotes, contextual commentary, or other forms of annotation.\u201d \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Journalists writing about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.racket.news\/p\/america-this-week-july-24-31-2022\">controversial topics<\/a>\u00a0do not link directly to primary sources but instead filter such news \u201cthrough multiple layers of condemnation by a shrinking pool of academics trusted to read raw material.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tabletmag.com\/sections\/news\/articles\/one-weird-trick-fixing-elections-nadine-strossen-matthew-harwood\">Our best and brightest<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/technology\/4287616-elon-musks-immoral-dangerous-failing-experiment-in-free-speech\/\">unabashedly seek<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2023\/08\/25\/political-conspiracies-facebook-youtube-elon-musk\/\">silence<\/a>\u00a0individuals who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/how-twitter-rigged-the-covid-debate\">disagree<\/a>\u00a0with their betters and to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2023\/11\/08\/twitter-news-global-conflicts-00123806\">regulate<\/a>\u00a0(or outright\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/greenwald.substack.com\/p\/how-silicon-valley-in-a-show-of-monopolistic\">suppress<\/a>) social media sites that allow\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2022-05-17\/buffalo-shooting-social-media-is-driving-harmful-cycle-of-online-radicalization#xj4y7vzkg\">free<\/a>\u00a0(or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.twitter.com\/en_us\/topics\/product\/2023\/freedom-of-speech-not-reach-an-update-on-our-enforcement-philosophy\">free-ish<\/a>) debate about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefp.com\/p\/tik-tok-young-americans-hamas-mike-gallag\">unsafe thoughts<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/donovancleckley\/status\/1327490159076585477?lang=en\">Opinion<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ggreenwald\/status\/1397623499888463872?lang=en\">makers<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/civil-rights\/542711-cancel-culture-is-just-free-speech-holding-others-accountable\/\">cheer on<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/banning-white-supremacy-censorship-accountability\/\">activists<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZWempcntx_0\">seeking<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/bjbp9d\/do-social-media-bans-work\">deplatform<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/united-states\/2022\/12\/20\/free-speech-is-not-in-peril-in-america\">shout down<\/a>\u00a0an ever-growing list of enemies, including those who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/taibbi.substack.com\/p\/americas-intellectual-no-fly-zone\">refused to toe the party line<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebulwark.com\/the-long-history-of-glenn-greenwalds-kissing-up-to-the-kremlin\/\">Russia\u2019s war in the Ukraine<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/knightcolumbia.org\/page\/about-the-knight-institute\">Self-proclaimed defenders of press freedom<\/a>\u00a0are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/knightcolumbia.org\/blog\/knight-institute-announces-scholars-litigators-and-tech-policy-experts-who-will-participate-in-initiative-on-jawboning-and-the-first-amendment\">rallying<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/knightcolumbia.org\/blog\/persuasion-or-coercion-the-fifth-circuits-muddled-view-of-missouri-v-biden\">safeguard<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stevevladeck.substack.com\/p\/49-jawboning-and-social-media-in\">right<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/knightcolumbia.org\/blog\/getting-the-facts-straight-some-observations-on-the-fifth-circuit-ruling-in-missouri-v-biden-1\">social media companies<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/knightcolumbia.org\/blog\/missouri-v-biden-an-opportunity-to-clarify-messy-first-amendment-doctrine\">collaborate<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/shotatlife.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/NEW-biden-full-team.png\">state actors<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.racket.news\/p\/europe-get-off-our-speech-lawn\">squelch wrongheaded arguments<\/a>\u00a0and to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cartercenter.org\/resources\/pdfs\/news\/peace_publications\/democracy\/the-big-lie-and-big-tech.pdf\">wall the incorrigible off<\/a>\u00a0from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2021\/05\/taking-action-against-people-who-repeatedly-share-misinformation\/\">marketplace of ideas<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Biden Administration tried to establish a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2022\/05\/02\/fact-sheet-dhs-internal-working-group-protects-free-speech-other-fundamental-rights\">governance board<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/what-is-dhs-disinformation-governance-board-and-why-is-everyone-so-mad-about-it\/\">combat disinformation<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>That crusade is not going well.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As Martin Gurri has pointed out\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/@martingurri\">time<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.city-journal.org\/person\/martin-gurri\">time again<\/a>, America\u2019s thought leaders and information curators are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoursemagazine.com\/politics\/2023\/08\/10\/elites-need-a-lesson-in-humility\/\">on the ropes<\/a>.\u00a0 Academics, think tankers, pundits, and policymakers no longer can hide the fact that they often either\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=R5lZPWNFizQ\">have no clue<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.nytimes.com\/www.nytimes.com\/books\/98\/03\/15\/home\/halberstam-best.html\">what they are doing<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/11\/12\/50-years-of-predictions-that-the-climate-apocalypse-is-nigh\/\">are all too willing<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2020\/09\/05\/journalisms-new-propaganda-tool-using-confirmed-to-mean-its-opposite\/?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=theintercept&amp;utm_source=twitter\">to oversell their case<\/a>\u2014and will\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/03\/28\/opinion\/covid-lab-leak-theory-disinformation.html\">purposefully obfuscate<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2020\/10\/19\/hunter-biden-story-russian-disinfo-430276\">outright lie<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/08\/04\/professor-fired-for-faking-data-to-prove-whites-want-longer-sentences-for-blacks\/\">from time<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2015\/05\/science-retraction-gay-marriage-views-fake-data-118131\">to time<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2017\/jun\/03\/quasi-religious-great-self-esteem-con\">to get<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2023\/aug\/09\/scientific-misconduct-retraction-watch\">their way<\/a>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yet most experts are more than happy to pretend as if\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/why-the-smart-party-never-learns-democrats-self-reflection-elite-culture-media-universities-covid-inflation-election-excuses-11670592902\">nothing were wrong<\/a>\u00a0as they claw their way up the professional ladder.\u00a0 Some insist on singing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/view\/articles\/2011-11-27\/for-better-government-don-t-kill-all-the-lawyers-noah-feldman?in_source=embedded-checkout-banner\">paeans<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/article\/in-praise-of-jargon\/\">themselves<\/a>\u00a0while demanding ever-greater protection from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.columbia.edu\/news\/archive\/free-speech-and-academic-freedom\">open competition<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/healthcare\/589528-scientists-medical-professionals-defend-fauci-after-heated-exchanges-with\/\">even outside criticism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Take, for instance, the authorities advocating a muscular foreign policy or demanding robust countermeasures against domestic extremism.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cato.org\/policy-analysis\/step-back-lessons-us-foreign-policy-failed-war-terror\">Global War on Terror<\/a>\u00a0was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/pictures\/abuse-photos-ii\/4\/\">not<\/a>\u00a0America\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/10\/28\/us\/politics\/guantanamo-detainee-torture.html\">finest hour<\/a>.\u00a0 We lost\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sigar.mil\/interactive-reports\/what-we-need-to-learn\/\">Afghanistan<\/a>.\u00a0 It would be difficult to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/timeline\/iraq-war\">claim<\/a>\u00a0victory in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fpri.org\/article\/2023\/03\/how-america-misunderstood-iraqi-politics-and-lost-the-war\/\">Iraq<\/a>.\u00a0 The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/38aead1a-9614-11e6-a80e-bcd69f323a8b\">great hopes<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/article\/arab-spring-ten-years-whats-legacy-uprisings\">Arab Spring<\/a>\u00a0came to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2023\/04\/18\/rachid-ghannouchi-arrest-tunisia-kais-saied\/\">naught<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>But repeated failures did\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2022\/02\/putin-russia-invasion-ukraine-war\/621182\/\">not cause self-doubt<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2022\/11\/russia-ukraine-nuclear-war-fear-us-policy\/672020\/\">creep into the minds<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theliberalpatriot.substack.com\/p\/time-to-stop-deterring-ourselves?utm_source=profile&amp;utm_medium=reader2\">credentialed militarists<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.persuasion.community\/p\/now-is-not-the-time-to-let-putin\">any stripe<\/a>.\u00a0 Most\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebulwark.com\/the-discord-leaks-no-ukraine-is-not-doomed\/\">continue<\/a>d to insist that the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/taibbi.substack.com\/p\/give-war-a-chance\">next war would go our way<\/a>. <\/strong>\u00a0Some have even been trying to expand their territory, such as the counterinsurgency specialists who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesoufancenter.org\/team\/colin-p-clarke\/\">tout<\/a>\u00a0their experience in (wildly unsuccessful) campaigns against international extremism and propaganda when marketing themselves as would-be, should-be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2022\/01\/06\/far-right-extremists-jan-6-domestic-terrorism-526505\">leaders<\/a>\u00a0of the war against domestic extremism and disinformation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There was never any reason to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.racket.news\/p\/media-biden-administration-double\">assume<\/a>\u00a0that the pro-war clique would fare\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2023\/12\/04\/ukraine-counteroffensive-us-planning-russia-war\/\">any<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2023\/12\/04\/ukraine-counteroffensive-stalled-russia-war-defenses\/\">better<\/a>\u00a0if provided\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/us-european-officials-broach-topic-peace-negotiations-ukraine-sources-rcna123628\">yet another opportunity<\/a>. \u00a0And\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/12\/11\/us\/politics\/us-ukraine-war-strategy.html\">failures<\/a>\u00a0have piled on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mattbivens.substack.com\/p\/ukraines-percolating-hatred-of-america\">missed<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaronmate.net\/p\/ukraines-top-negotiator-confirms\">opportunities<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/18\/world\/europe\/ukraine-russia-strategy-avdiivka.html?searchResultPosition=2\">Ukraine<\/a>\u00a0to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/17\/world\/europe\/russia-ukraine-war-map.html?searchResultPosition=1\">point<\/a>\u00a0where security specialists are,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/08\/22\/opinion\/vietnam-was-unwinnable.html\">once again<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liberalpatriot.com\/p\/stabbing-ukraine-in-the-back\">scrambling<\/a>\u00a0to protect the foreign policy establishment by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.liberalpatriot.com\/p\/how-an-endless-war-begins\">blaming<\/a>\u00a0its most recent fiasco on a lack of American\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/plus.thebulwark.com\/p\/ukraine-hardship-and-hope-bernard-henri-levy?utm_source=profile&amp;utm_medium=reader2\">commitment<\/a>\u00a0to winning\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/samf.substack.com\/p\/ukraine-through-the-gloom\">what<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/warontherocks.com\/2024\/01\/ukraines-war-of-narratives\/?__s=a5dzvtrsk4er4amzsdnj\">may<\/a>\u00a0always have been an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/international\/4467823-the-idea-of-total-ukrainian-victory-is-delusional\/\">unwinnable<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/11\/03\/world\/ukraine-president-warns-long-attritional-war\/index.html\">war<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The crisis afflicting much of America\u2019s expert class is less that the internet has made it easier for the public to push back, and more that the elite\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/noahpinion.substack.com\/p\/on-the-wisdom-of-the-historians?utm_source=%2Fsaved&amp;utm_medium=reader2\">preferred models<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.persuasion.community\/p\/the-problem-with-systemic-racism\">just don\u2019t work<\/a>.\u00a0 For instance, many disinformation experts justify censorship with a model positing that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/americas-ruling-regime-doesnt-fear-disinformation-it-fears-truth-opinion-1679940\">malevolent information drives malevolent acts<\/a>.\u00a0 Similarly, some domestic terrorism experts\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.racket.news\/p\/report-on-the-censorship-industrial-74b\">justify increased surveillance<\/a>\u00a0with a model positing that terrorists broadcast their \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/theliberalpatriot.substack.com\/p\/the-tough-last-mile-on-domestic-counterterrorism\">terrorist intent<\/a>\u201d before engaging in acts of terrorism.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But, even if most people who commit violent acts were exposed to disinformation or made some announcement of terrorist intent, notably\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.leefang.com\/p\/private-spies-hired-by-the-fbi-and\">lacking<\/a>\u00a0is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thecritic.co.uk\/the-next-great-disinformation-panic\/\">substantial evidence<\/a>\u00a0that a significant percentage of the people exposed to disinformation or of the individuals articulating terrorist intent go on to commit violent acts.\u00a0 In other words, many of our leading domestic security experts seem unwilling or unable to differentiate between a hypothesis and a theory.\u00a0 This is suboptimal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Worse, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoursemagazine.com\/p\/delusion-and-retreat?utm_source=profile&amp;utm_medium=reader2\">smarter-than-thou crowd<\/a>\u00a0continues to push for surveillance and censorship despite the glaring problems with their firmly held beliefs about causality and causation.\u00a0 <\/strong>The proposition that bad ideas lead to bad acts has been \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/taibbi.substack.com\/p\/the-fbis-transformation-from-national\">disproven over and over again<\/a>.\u201d \u00a0And even many of the authorities seeking to elevate their profiles by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/how-stochastic-terrorism-uses-disgust-to-incite-violence\/\">fearmongering<\/a>\u00a0about \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-features\/trumps-assassination-dog-whistle-was-even-scarier-than-you-think-112138\/\">stochastic terrorism<\/a>\u201d must\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2015\/11\/30\/stochastic-terrorism-and-the-what-do-you-do-about-it-question.html\">admit<\/a>\u00a0that the hateful speech in the establishment\u2019s targets href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2021\/06\/30\/critical-race-theory-lightning-rod-opinion-497046\">declare victory<\/a>\u00a0when faced with a threat to their position, so experts often\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harvardmagazine.com\/2018\/02\/death-of-expertise-by-tom-nichols\">decry dissent<\/a>\u00a0while studiously\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/philpapers.org\/archive\/SESMU.pdf\">disproved<\/a>\u00a0theory, to advance a fashionable\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/how-preapproved-narratives-corrupt-science-false-studies-covid-climate-change-5bee0844\">narrative<\/a>, or to snuff out groundbreaking work capable of challenging the orthodoxies upon which their reputations rest. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.persuasion.community\/p\/how-broken-is-academia\">authority system<\/a>\u00a0even\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.joshbarro.com\/p\/universities-are-not-on-the-level\">incents<\/a>\u00a0experts to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2019\/08\/06\/study-says-authors-exaggerate-their-findings-paper-abstracts\">exaggerate<\/a>.\u00a0 To draw attention in crowded fields or obtain grant money from activist sources,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/01\/03\/historians-scholars-biden-lunch-democracy-00133765\">specialists<\/a>\u00a0commonly conflate advocacy with analysis, make overly dire predictions, then demand radical measures to avert the impending crises.\u00a0 And very rarely are experts punished for\u00a0<a established professors.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The deference afforded to tenured faculty within the American academy not only makes our colleges and universities incredibly hostile environments for truly innovative ideas, but also creates ideal conditions for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vcresearch.berkeley.edu\/faculty\/jonathan-zwicker\">alpha-sycophants<\/a>\u00a0valiant enough to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.columbia.edu\/~dbl11\/index.html\">kowtow<\/a>\u00a0their way\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eas.princeton.edu\/people\/paize-keulemans\">to the top<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Protecting academic authorities from the consequences of their actions over-incents \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.simplejustice.us\/2021\/04\/26\/sophistry-is-bad-but-lying-doesnt-make-it-real\/\">brave<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chronicle.com\/article\/the-political-machine-behind-the-war-on-academic-freedom?sra=true\">other<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/why-academic-freedom-challenges-are-dangerous-for-democracy\/\">establishment<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaup.org\/article\/academic-freedom-democratic-imperative\">outlets<\/a>\u00a0about the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/society\/higher-education-gop-penn-freedom-teach\/\">need<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pen.org\/the-perilous-state-of-academic-freedom-and-free-expression-in-education\/\">academics<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/education\/600123-undermining-higher-educations-vital-role-in-american-democracy\/\">remain<\/a>\u00a0a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.degruyter.com\/academic-freedom-and-freedom-of-speech-a-short-history-of-a-complex-relationship\/\">self-regulating profession<\/a>, the greatest threats to the advance of learning and to academic freedom come from within the academy and are, at minimum, exacerbated by a system that permits faculty self-governance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s high time for a round of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4026110\">creative destruction<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/strong>The non-experts who oversee or fund America\u2019s colleges and universities should\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/politics-colleges-and-universities-florida-state-government-texas-education-4f0fe0c5c18ed227fabae3744e8ff51d\">consider<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/news-and-politics\/2010\/08\/the-case-for-getting-rid-of-tenure.html\">doing away<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2013\/03\/its-time-for-tenure-to-lose-te\">with tenure<\/a>\u00a0and exposing academics to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.realcleardefense.com\/articles\/2024\/09\/16\/%20https:\/www.economist.com\/science-and-technology\/2014\/07\/19\/intelligent-intelligence%20\">crucible of competition<\/a>. \u00a0After all, pretty much everyone outside the Ivory Tower realizes that the fairest and most efficient way to deal with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.realcleardefense.com\/articles\/2024\/09\/16\/%20https:\/www.vox.com\/future-perfect\/21504366\/science-replication-crisis-peer-review-statistics%20\">replication<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.realcleardefense.com\/articles\/2024\/09\/16\/%20https:\/jessesingal.substack.com\/p\/weve-barely-begun-to-grapple-with%20\">crisis<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.realcleardefense.com\/articles\/2024\/09\/16\/%20https:\/www.thecut.com\/2017\/01\/psychologys-racism-measuring-tool-isnt-up-to-the-job.html%20\">social sciences<\/a>\u00a0is an employment crisis among\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.realcleardefense.com\/articles\/2024\/09\/16\/%20https:\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2017\/12\/iat-behavior-problem.html%20\">social
