India Won’t Capitulate To American Demands To Ban RT & Sputnik’s National Hubs<\/span><\/p>\n

The Hindu<\/a>\u00a0cited unnamed government sources to report that \u201cU.S. officials have spoken to the Ministry of External Affairs about joining their actions against what they call \u2018Russian disinformation\u2019, by revoking accreditations and designating their journalists under the \u2018Foreign Missions Act\u2019. However, while the Ministry has been silent on the issue, government officials said that the debate on sanctions is not relevant to India.\u201d The US should have known that India wouldn\u2019t ever capitulate to its demands.<\/p>\n

The decades-long Russian-Indian Strategic Partnership has been rejuvenated over the past two and a half years since the special operation began after India\u00a0stepped up to preemptively avert<\/a>\u00a0Russia\u2019s potentially disproportionate dependence on China. <\/strong>Time and again, India has responded to American pressure to distance itself from Russia by\u00a0redoubling their relations<\/a>, which is predicated on\u00a0accelerating tri-multipolarity processes<\/a>\u00a0with a view towards jointly midwifing complex multipolarity (\u201cmultiplexity\u201d).<\/p>\n

On the soft power front, a survey carried out by India\u2019s prestigious\u00a0Observer Research Foundation<\/a>\u00a0in late 2022 showed that their country\u2019s youth regarded Russia as their most reliable partner. Meanwhile, a\u00a0US-based global business intel company<\/a>\u00a0confirmed two months later that adults view Russia as the country most allied to their own. This backdrop explains why so many were confused over the summer when it was discovered that RT and Sputnik had shared inconsistent depictions of India\u2019s territorial integrity.<\/p>\n

That scandal was analyzed\u00a0here<\/a>, which drew attention to how both publicly financed international media flagships are editorially autonomous but were influenced in those examples by what can be described as Russia\u2019s pro-BRI policymaking faction. This incident discredits the US\u2019\u00a0subsequent allegation<\/a>\u00a0that those two operate as instruments of Russian intelligence since Moscow would never order them to doubt its Indian strategic partner\u2019s territorial integrity and had nothing to do with those inconsistent depictions.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Prime Minister Modi\u2019s\u00a0trip to Moscow<\/a>\u00a0soon thereafter presumably addressed this \u201crogue\u201d activity and will likely ensure that it\u2019s not repeated now that Russian officials are probably aware of this scandal. RT and Sputnik are publicly financed, after all, and must therefore abide by their patron\u2019s guidelines. This doesn\u2019t mean that they\u2019re \u201cstate-run\u201d, let alone intelligence fronts, but just that they have an obligation to ensure that this doesn\u2019t happen again considering that they\u2019re supposed to advance state interests.<\/p>\n

About those, not only do they concern\u00a0full support<\/a>\u00a0for the entirety of India\u2019s territorial claims, but they also involve analyzing and articulating a multipolar perspective on International Relations. It was explained\u00a0here<\/a>\u00a0in spring 2022 that this worldview isn\u2019t the product of \u201cRussian propaganda\u201d since the Global Majority\u2019s interests align naturally align with it. This includes India\u2019s, which appreciates the role that RT and Sputnik play in promoting their country\u2019s geostrategic balancing act (\u201cmulti<\/a>–alignment<\/a>\u201d).<\/p>\n

Banning their national hubs like the US demanded would therefore have amounted to damaging its own interests, both in the soft power realm as was explained as well as in the grand strategic one by backstabbing Russia and thus forcing it more into China\u2019s arms at India\u2019s possible expense.<\/strong> As the self-declared\u00a0Voice of the Global South<\/a>, the world\u2019s most populous country, and its fifth-largest economy, India is now a trendsetter, so others might be emboldened by its defiance of the US to follow its lead.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
