How Wealth Inequality Has Changed Across The Globe Since 2008<\/span><\/p>\n

This graphic, via Visual Capitalist’s Marcus Lu, <\/a>tracks wealth inequality changes in various countries as measured by their\u00a0Gini index values<\/strong>\u00a0in 2008 to 2023.<\/p>\n

Data is accessed via the\u00a0UBS Global Wealth Report 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u2139\ufe0f The Gini index measures wealth inequality within a population, ranging from 0% (perfect equality) to 100% (maximum inequality).<\/em><\/p>\n

Higher values indicate greater disparity in wealth distribution. For example, a country where one person owned all the assets and everyone else had nothing would have a Gini index of 100%.<\/p>\n

In UBS\u2019 list of select countries,\u00a0Singapore<\/strong>\u00a0has seen the largest growth in its Gini index, up to 70% in 2023 from 53% in 2008.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

The government has enacted policies intended to attract\u00a0high-net-worth individuals<\/a>\u00a0as well as international investment capital to Singapore.<\/p>\n

On the flip side, policies to reduce inequality have been constructed through an\u00a0economic lens<\/a>, such as trying to remove structural barriers that prevent people from maximizing productivity.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, in the same time period, Singapore\u2019s average wealth rose by 116%, while\u00a0median wealth<\/a>\u00a0fell by 2%.<\/p>\n

Also in the top three,\u00a0Finland<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Spain<\/strong>\u00a0join Singapore as the three countries who\u2019ve seen a 20 percentage point increase in their Gini index values since 2008. Of the 29 countries analyzed by UBS, 18 registered rising wealth inequality.<\/p>\n

However, wealth disparity has also reduced for several countries, some of them\u00a0large economies<\/a>:\u00a0the U.S.<\/strong>\u00a0(-1%),\u00a0Germany<\/strong>\u00a0(-6%), and\u00a0Saudi Arabia<\/strong>\u00a0(-13%).<\/p>\n

A recent\u00a0Federal Reserve analysis<\/a>\u00a0found that from 2019 to 2022, low-wealth groups in America had larger percentage gains in wealth compared to their high-wealth counterparts.<\/p>\n
