Daily Wire<\/a>\u00a0commentator\u00a0Matt Walsh<\/a>\u00a0released his bitingly comedic documentary,\u00a0Am I Racist?<\/em><\/a>, in early September to great acclaim, vexxing film critics and industry insiders who see themselves as the exclusive gatekeepers of the silver screen.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The movie\u2019s surprise success\u2014even while facing vicious left-wing attacks\u2014stood in stark contrast with the failure of Francis Ford Coppola\u2019s\u00a0Megalopolis<\/em><\/a>, a sci-fi political drama with an anti-Trump political subtext that opened over the weekend with neither critical nor audience acclaim<\/strong>\u2014despite its bloated budget, all-star cast and abundance of\u00a0Hollywood<\/a>\u00a0hype.<\/p>\n

This pattern may signal a shifting trend in consumer sensibilities. Prior conservative-friendly films, such as Angel Studios\u2019s\u00a0Sound of Freedom<\/em><\/a>, have\u00a0exceeded<\/a>\u00a0box office expectations, while movies and television series deemed exceedingly \u201cwoke\u201d have continued to fizzle.<\/p>\n

That includes\u00a0Disney\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0most recent addition to the Star Wars canon,\u00a0The Acolyte,<\/em>\u00a0which\u00a0drew backlash<\/a>\u00a0from loyal fans for its preoccupation with feminist and LGBT\u00a0virtue-signaling<\/a>.<\/p>\n

By aggressively alienating conservative viewers, leftist Hollywood studios \u201care leaving plenty of money on the table, and we\u2019re happy to come in and take some of it, because, at a minimum, you are explicitly refusing to serve 50% of the audience,\u201d Walsh said, according\u00a0to\u00a0<\/a>Variety<\/a>.<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Am I Racist?<\/em>, an irreverent look at how\u00a0\u201cdiversity, equity and inclusion\u201d<\/a>\u00a0proponents fail to grasp their own hypocrisy, raked in\u00a0$4.5 million on opening<\/a>\u00a0and has\u00a0a 97% audience approval rating<\/a>\u00a0on Rotten Tomatoes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Walsh, who incurred leftist notoriety with his previous documentary,\u00a0What Is a<\/em>\u00a0Woman?<\/em>, goes undercover in the film as\u00a0a progressive interviewer<\/a>, meeting with prominent DEI speakers like\u00a0White Fragility<\/em>\u00a0author\u00a0Robin DiAngelo<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The movie, which cost $3 million to make (the expenses paid to so-called DEI experts are a running joke throughout the film) had grossed more than $11 million as of Sept. 30, according\u00a0to Box Office Mojo<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile,\u00a0Megalopolis<\/em>\u00a0made\u00a0$4 million at the box office<\/a>\u00a0in its opening weekend and has\u00a0a 34% audience approval rating<\/a>\u00a0on Rotten Tomatoes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The film\u2014a\u00a0$120 million<\/a>\u00a0passion-project decades in the making for the\u00a0Godfather<\/em>\u00a0director\u2014is a\u00a0cautionary tale about a fragile republic, susceptible to greed, corruption and fascism, with a plot that loosely transposes the fall of the Roman empire into a modern setting.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Unfortunately for Coppola, his film failed to impress most critics, who thought the message was\u00a0obfuscated by too many ideas<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While the movie tried to be nominally inclusive by casting Trump-supporting Oscar-winner Jon Voight, Coppola wasn\u2019t shy about connecting it explicitly to the current U.S. political landscape, insinuating that democracy hung in the balance with the upcoming Nov. 5 election.<\/p>\n

\u201cMen like Donald Trump are not at the moment in charge, but there is a trend happening in the world, there is a trend toward the more neo-right, even fascist division, which is frightening,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Coppola said, according\u00a0to\u00a0Deadline<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
