The traveling object fell into Earth\u2019s orbit in September and will remain there until late November. Rocky in disposition and roughly the size of a school bus, the object is an asteroid, yet scientists are calling it a \u201csecond moon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/image%28429%29_0.jpg?itok=OkC7nidQ\"><em>An illustration by The Epoch Times shows an asteroid orbiting the Earth. Shutterstock\/ buradaki\/ Rawhi302\/ Mikael Damkier<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>How the Earth Came to Have Two Moons<\/h2>\n<p>Traveling along a horseshoe-shaped path through the solar system, this asteroid is classified as a near-Earth object, or NEO. There are many NEOs in outer space. While making a flyby close to Earth, this particular object\u2019s gravitational energy temporarily fell to negative levels, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.3847\/2515-5172\/ad781f\">study<\/a> published by the American Astronomical Society. This implied that it was in Earth\u2019s orbit.<\/p>\n<p>On Sept. 29, it became official.<strong> The NEO got caught in Earth\u2019s orbit, technically making it a second moon<\/strong>. It was named 2024 PT5. However, it won\u2019t last long; the rock won\u2019t even revolve once around the Earth before hurtling off in a few weeks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/image%28430%29_0.jpg?itok=OqhK0RuM\"><em>An illustration shows an asteroid orbiting the Earth. Shutterstock\/ Mikael Damkier<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Although technically a \u201cmoon,\u201d the object measures only 33 feet long, roughly 345,000 times smaller than our permanent lunar satellite. Most people won\u2019t see it, as it will be far too small for human eyes or amateur equipment to spot. Astronomers will be able to observe it using high-powered telescopes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/asteroids\/can-you-see-earth-s-new-minimoon-with-the-naked-eye\">Live Science<\/a> writes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>The object is too small and dim for typical amateur telescopes and binoculars,<\/strong>\u201d study author Carlos de la Fuente Marcos, a professor at Universidad Complutense de Madrid, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/earth-will-capture-second-moon-sept-2024\">Space.com<\/a>. \u201c<strong>However, the object is well within the brightness range of typical telescopes used by professional astronomers.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So, for now, planet Earth is babysitting an asteroid, though it won\u2019t overstay its welcome. On Nov. 25, it will depart from orbiting Earth and start its journey back into deep space, not to be seen again for decades.<\/p>\n<h2>Where Did It Come From?<\/h2>\n<p>Over the years, countless other space objects like 2024 PT5 have grazed by Earth. This NEO is said to originate from the Arjunas, a secondary asteroid belt in the solar system that aligns closely with Earth. Hoards of NEOs can be found within this cluster, and some have even visited Earth before.
