Former Harvard Pres Claudine Gay Receives ‘Leadership And Courage’ Award Despite Controversy-Plagued Tenure<\/span><\/p>\n

Claudine Gay, the former president of Harvard University, was recently given a \u201cLeadership and Courage\u201d award<\/strong> despite her controversial response to anti-Semitism and the plagiarism allegations that surrounded her time in Harvard\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

The Harvard Black Alumni Society\u00a0granted<\/a>\u00a0the award to the former Harvard president on Sept. 28 at a gathering of the school\u2019s black alumni.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Harvard Black Alumni Society President Monica M. Clark\u00a0praised<\/a>\u00a0Gay and said: \u201cThis reunion \u2014 all these people who were expressing all this support for her \u2014 they were all there. Celebrating her, and clapping for her, and cheering her on.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

One alumnus, Thomas G. Stewart, said: \u201cShe\u2019s humble, she\u2019s smart, she\u2019s \u2014 fortunately \u2014 someone that still is affiliated with the University, and has pledged her support to it to her dying day.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s in good spirits, and folks should know that,\u201d <\/strong><\/em>Stewart added.<\/p>\n

Claudine Gay\u00a0resigned<\/a>\u00a0on Jan. 2 following her controversial congressional testimony, during which she\u00a0failed<\/a>\u00a0to unequivocally state that she would condemn rhetoric \u201ccalling for the genocide of Jews.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gay was asked at the hearing: \u201cAt Harvard, does calling for the genocide of Jews violate Harvard\u2019s rules of bullying and harassment?\u201d Gay responded: \u201cIt can be, depending on the context.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI got caught up in what had become at that point, an extended, combative exchange about policies and procedures,\u201d Gay told\u00a0The Harvard Crimson<\/em>\u00a0at the time. \u201cWhat I should have had the presence of mind to do in that moment was return to my guiding truth, which is that calls for violence against our Jewish community \u2014 threats to our Jewish students \u2014 have no place at Harvard, and will never go unchallenged.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gay was\u00a0plagued<\/a>\u00a0by a controversy regarding her allegedly repeated plagiarism as well.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The former president was\u00a0accused<\/a>\u00a0of committing plagiarism almost 50 times, and later acknowledged that she had \u201cmade mistakes,\u201d but still tried to justify herself by claiming she was only guilty of \u201ccitation errors.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI have never misrepresented my research findings, nor have I ever claimed credit for the research of others. Moreover, the citation errors should not obscure a fundamental truth: I proudly stand by my work and its impact on the field,\u201d <\/strong><\/em>she wrote in a\u00a0New York Times<\/em><\/a>\u00a0op-ed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMy critics found instances in my academic writings where some material duplicated other scholars\u2019 language, without proper attribution,\u201d she continued. \u201cWhen I learned of these errors, I promptly requested corrections from the journals in which the flagged articles were published, consistent with how I have seen similar faculty cases handled at Harvard.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gay also accused her critics of racism, saying they \u201crecycled tired racial stereotypes about Black talent and temperament.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
