{"id":1498440,"date":"2024-10-25T08:15:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-25T12:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1498440"},"modified":"2024-10-25T08:15:00","modified_gmt":"2024-10-25T12:15:00","slug":"visualizing-the-eus-critical-minerals-gap-by-2030","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/visualizing-the-eus-critical-minerals-gap-by-2030\/1498440\/","title":{"rendered":"Visualizing The EU&#8217;s Critical Minerals Gap By 2030"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">Visualizing The EU&#8217;s Critical Minerals Gap By 2030<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>The European Union\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/single-market-economy.ec.europa.eu\/sectors\/raw-materials\/areas-specific-interest\/critical-raw-materials\/critical-raw-materials-act_en\">Critical Raw Material Act<\/a>\u00a0sets out <strong>several ambitious goals to enhance the resilience of its critical mineral supply chains.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visualcapitalist.com\/charted-the-eus-critical-minerals-gap-by-2030\/#google_vignette\"><em>As Visual Capitalist&#8217;s Bruno Venditti details below,<\/em><\/a> the Act includes non-binding targets for the EU to build sufficient mining capacity so that mines within the bloc can meet 10% of its critical mineral demand.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the Act establishes a goal for 40% of demand to be met by processing within the bloc, and 25% through recycling.<\/p>\n<p>Several months after the Act\u2019s passage in May 2024, this graphic highlights the scale of the challenge the EU aims to overcome. This data comes exclusively from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benchmarkminerals.com\/\">Benchmark Mineral Intelligence<\/a>, as of July 2024. The graphic excludes synthetic graphite.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/Benchmark-4_EU-Critical-Minerals.jpg?itok=yrbVKwW9\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Securing Europe\u2019s Supply of Critical Materials<\/h2>\n<p>With the exception of nickel mining, none of the battery minerals\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/elements.visualcapitalist.com\/investment-battery-demand-by-2040\/\">deemed strategic<\/a>\u00a0by the EU are on track to meet these goals.<\/p>\n<p>Graphite, the largest mineral component used in batteries, is of particular concern. There is no EU-mined supply of manganese ore or coke, the precursor to synthetic graphite.<\/p>\n<p>By 2030, the European Union is expected to supply 16,000 tonnes of flake graphite locally, compared to a domestic mining target of 45,000 tonnes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2024-10-24_19-54-44.jpg?itok=Ata0Fj-w\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The bloc is projected to produce 29,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE), compared to a 46,000 tonnes target.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of mineral processing, the bloc is expected to process 25% of its lithium requirements, 76% of nickel, 51% of cobalt, 36% of manganese, and 20% of flake graphite.<\/p>\n<p>The EU is expected to recycle only 22% of its lithium needs, 25% of nickel, 26% of cobalt, and 14% of manganese.
