The editorial editor for the\u00a0Los Angeles Times\u00a0<\/em><\/a>quit in protest after the newspaper\u2019s owner blocked a decision to endorse Vice President\u00a0Kamala Harris<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am resigning because I want to make it clear that I am not OK with us being silent,\u201d <\/strong><\/em>Mariel Garza\u00a0told the\u00a0Columbia Journalism Review<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn dangerous times, honest people need to stand up. This is how I\u2019m standing up.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Garza\u2019s resignation followed the news this week that Patrick Soon-Shiong, the billionaire doctor who purchased the\u00a0Los Angeles Times\u00a0<\/em>in 2018 for $500 million, shot down the\u00a0Times\u00a0<\/em>editorial board\u2019s attempt to endorse Harris.<\/p>\n

This will be the first election cycle since 2004 in which the\u00a0Times\u00a0<\/em>has not endorsed a candidate.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a social media post, Soon-Shiong explained he offered the editorial board the chance to \u201cdraft a factual analysis of all the POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE policies by EACH candidate during their tenures at the White House, and how these policies affected the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWith this clear and non-partisan information side-by-side, our readers could decide who would be worthy of being President for the next four years,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> he wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cInstead of adopting this path as suggested, the Editorial Board chose to remain silent and I accepted their decision.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

So many comments about the @latimes<\/a> Editorial Board not providing a Presidential endorsement this year. Let me clarify how this decision came about.<\/p>\n

The Editorial Board was provided the opportunity to draft a factual analysis of all the POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE policies by EACH\u2026<\/p>\n

Garza alleged Soon-Shiong\u2019s decision not to endorse Harris amounted to\u00a0greater political interference<\/a>\u00a0than if he had just allowed the editorial board to throw its support behind her.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a point in time where you speak your conscience no matter what,\u201d Garza told CJR. <\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd an endorsement was the logical next step after a series of editorials we\u2019ve been writing about how dangerous Trump is to democracy, about his unfitness to be president, about his threats to jail his enemies.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The non-endorsement of Harris is a blow to the Democrat, who began her political career in\u00a0California<\/a>, where the paper is based.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
