Israeli Airstrikes Pummel Syria For A Second Day In A Row<\/span><\/p>\n

The last two days have witnessed more Israeli airstrikes carried out on Syria, with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Tuesday issuing rare direct confirmation that it targeted Hezbollah weapons depots<\/strong> in the al-Qusayr area in western Syria, close to the border with Lebanon.<\/p>\n

“The IDF says Hezbollah\u2019s armament unit is responsible for storing weapons in Lebanon, and it recently expanded its activities to Syria, storing weapons in al-Qusayr,” Israeli media reports.<\/p>\n

And the NY Times writes of the expanding and more frequent nature of the raids<\/a>, “The Israeli military on Tuesday said its Air Force had struck targets in Syria for the second day in a row<\/strong>, attacks it said were aimed at cutting off the flow of weapons and intelligence between Hezbollah, the armed Lebanese group, and its sponsor, Iran.”<\/p>\n

The day prior, on Monday, Syrian state media confirmed Israeli airstrikes south of Damascus. The attack again targeted an area known to attract many Shia religious pilgrims.<\/p>\n

SANA indicated that it involved Israeli warplanes hitting “a number of civilian sites south of Damascus, resulting in material losses.”<\/strong>\u00a0There are regional reports that at least two were left dead and five injured<\/strong> in the Monday attack on the Syrian capital’s suburbs.<\/p>\n

This could in part be Israel’s signaling Washington that whichever administration takes the White House, efforts to break up the ‘resistance axis’ of Tehran-Damascus-Hezbollah will continue.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made clear in remarks that regardless of whether a cease-fire deal could be reached related to Lebanon, Israel’s military would remain committed to “cutting Hezbollah\u2019s oxygen line from Iran via Syria.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

We reported previously<\/a> that just last week Israeli government minister and war cabinet member Gideon Saar\u00a0threatened<\/a>\u00a0Syria\u2019s President Bashar al-Assad,\u00a0warning that he will be \u201cin danger\u201d <\/strong>if his country continues to act as a \u201cconduit\u201d for Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah.<\/p>\n

Saar \u2013 who rejoined Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s government late last month \u2013\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0during a conference that Tel Aviv\u00a0\u201cmissed an opportunity\u201d to \u201ccollapse\u201d Assad\u2019s government<\/strong>, which was \u201csaved\u201d by Iran and Hezbollah.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Syria must not be permitted \u201cunder any circumstances to be a conduit for weapons supply from Iran to Hezbollah,\u201d the minister went on to say, adding that \u201cIsrael must make clear to Assad that if he chooses to harm Israeli security in this manner,\u00a0he places his regime in danger<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Israel \u201cwill not agree to Hezbollah\u2019s renewed buildup of power through Syria, and will not agree to the opening of a front against it from Syrian territory,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cRemoving Assad from the Iranian axis will have far-reaching consequences for Israel\u2019s security.\u201d Thus even if somehow ceasefire is reached in Lebanon, these regular Israeli attacks on Syria will likely continue.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
