Most of this value is in the\u00a0<strong>S&amp;P 500 index<\/strong>, which consists of the 500 largest publicly traded companies in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly all of the world\u2019s trillion-dollar companies belong in the S&amp;P 500: Apple, Nvidia, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta (also known as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.visualcapitalist.com\/cp\/charted-the-surging-value-of-magnificent-seven-2000-2024\/\">Magnificent Seven<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h2>Looking Outside the U.S.<\/h2>\n<p>After U.S. markets,\u00a0<strong>Developed Markets ex-U.S.<\/strong>\u00a0account for the next biggest share. Shown as the green segment in the chart, developed markets are economies with established financial systems and high levels of income.<\/p>\n<p>Excluding the U.S., the largest developed markets (by capitalization) according to S&amp;P are Japan, UK, Canada, France, and Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, there\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Emerging Markets<\/strong>\u00a0(yellow section) and<strong>\u00a0China<\/strong>\u00a0(red section). China is considered an emerging market, but was shown separately given its significance to the global economy.<\/p>\n<p>According to S&amp;P, the largest emerging markets (by capitalization) are China, India, Taiwan, Brazil, and Saudi Arabia.
