FBI Probes Origins Of Racist Text Messages<\/span><\/p>\n

Federal officials announced on Thursday that they are investigating racist text messages targeting black Americans throughout the country.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Residents in New York, Alabama, California, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Ohio have reported receiving hateful messages.<\/p>\n

The FBI said in a\u00a0statement<\/a> that it is aware of the situation and is in contact with the Justice Department and other federal authorities.<\/p>\n

The anonymous messages told recipients that they had been selected to report to a plantation to pick cotton.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The texts, which have been widely shared on social media, varied in wording but had similar tones. Some of the texts instructed individuals to meet at a specific address with their belongings, while other messages did not provide a location.<\/p>\n

Some texts mentioned the incoming administration.<\/p>\n

California mother Tasha Dunham reported that her teenage daughter received the message the day after the election. The message, which even included her daughter\u2019s name, instructed her to report to a plantation in North Carolina.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was very disturbing,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> Dunham said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody\u2019s just trying to figure out what does this all mean for me? So, I definitely had a lot of fear and concern.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Nashville College on \u2018High Alert\u2019<\/h2>\n

Students at Fisk University, a historically black college in Nashville, received an alert from campus safety officials, telling students that it is on \u201chigh alert\u201d following the matter.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are aware of disturbing and offensive messages circulating on social media, appearing to target members of our community,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> the alert<\/a> said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese messages, which suggest threats of violence and intimidation, are deeply unsettling. But we can assure you that these are likely the work of an automated bot or malicious actors with no real intentions or credibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Ohio Attorney General David Yost announced that his office is looking into the \u201cdespicable messages\u201d in a post<\/a> on X.<\/p>\n

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill\u00a0said<\/a> in a social media post that she directed the state\u2019s Bureau of Investigation to look into the origins of the \u201cdisgusting texts,\u201d which she said only intends to divide people.<\/p>\n

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) said the messages serve as a reminder that the struggle against racism and discrimination is far from over.<\/p>\n

Nimrod Chapel, Jr., President of the Missouri State Conference of the NAACP, called the messages an act of terrorism.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is terrorism plain and simple,\u201d <\/strong><\/em>Chapel wrote in a statement.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cIt points to a well-organized and resourced group that has decided to target Americans on our home soil based on the color of our skin. The schools that were targeted and law enforcement need to take these reports seriously and act quickly to prevent the escalation to physical violence.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The FBI encouraged the public to report threats of physical violence to local law enforcement authorities.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) dismissed<\/a> the situation in a social media post, accusing the FBI of sending the messages. \u201cIt\u2019s probably y\u2019all sending them. Pack your bags,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
