“Devastated”: Classes At Harvard, Penn, Columbia, Swarthmore & Others Canceled Over Trump Win<\/span><\/p>\n

Many professors canceled classes this week in the wake of Donald Trump\u2019s re-election to the Oval Office, citing the emotional needs and trauma of students.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Some scholars from at least three Ivy League schools canceled classes: Harvard, University of Pennsylvania and Columbia.<\/p>\n

\u201cJews endured calls for their genocide day and night last semester, and Columbia did nothing. Half the country votes for a candidate and Columbia elitists can\u2019t deal,\u201d posted Eliana Goldin on X, also including screenshots from several Columbia professors\u2019 memos about the cancelations.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cTheir blatant double standard couldn\u2019t be more offensive to the Jewish community at Columbia,\u201d <\/strong>Goldin stated.<\/em><\/p>\n

Michigan State University Professor Shlagha Borah said in a Wednesday memo to students:<\/p>\n

\u201dI am cancelling class today to grieve the presidential election results. As a queer, immigrant woman of colour, I cannot, in good conscience, go on about my day like everything is alright.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201dThis is a major historical event that we are witnessing. I hope you take this time to take care of yourself.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The writing and rhetoric professor, who was hired over the summer, added she would not discriminate against any students for their political beliefs, according to the memo, a copy of which was\u00a0posted<\/a>\u00a0by the X account End Wokeness.<\/p>\n

Mark Bullion, spokesman for MSU, told\u00a0The College Fix<\/em>\u00a0via email Thursday that campus leaders are \u201caware of the situation and are addressing it through the appropriate leadership channels.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

At Ohio University, Professor Amy Chadwick canceled her communications class \u201cto give space to those who are devastated by the election results.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have already interacted with students who are hurting badly, who are scared, who are tired, and who are unsure how to go on,\u201d <\/strong>stated Chadwick\u2019s memo, a copy of which was\u00a0posted<\/a>\u00a0on X by Old Row.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cFor those of you who are scared, traumatized, angry, etc., please know that you are not alone. There are resources available to help support you and there are pathways forward,\u201d the professor added. <\/em><\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026I know not everyone is upset at the results and I hope we can be gentle with each other today rather than create division.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Chadwick and Ohio University\u2019s media relations division did not respond to a request from\u00a0The College Fix<\/em>\u00a0seeking comment Thursday.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Harvard Crimson<\/em>\u00a0newspaper reported that several professors canceled classes at the Ivy League institution, but did not name names.<\/p>\n

\u201cCourses such as Sociology 1156: \u2018Statistics for Social Sciences\u2019 and Applied Math 22a: \u2018Solving and Optimizing,\u2019 as well as several General Education courses \u2014 1074: \u2018The Ancient Greek Hero\u2019 and 1111: \u2018Popular Culture and Modern China\u2019 among them \u2014 canceled their Wednesday classes, made attendance optional, or extended assignment deadlines,\u201d <\/em>the\u00a0Crimson<\/em>\u00a0reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The University of Pennsylvania\u2019s student newspaper reported similar actions, noting faculty canceled classes, made attendance optional, or delayed exams.<\/p>\n

\u201cNeuroscience professor Michael Kaplan also preemptively cancelled his Wednesday classes for his own well-being and due to his strict policy against \u2018politicking from the podium.\u2019 He explained that it seemed \u2018ridiculous\u2019 to consider lecturing without discussing the \u2018elephant in the room,’\u201d<\/strong> the\u00a0Daily Pennsylvanian\u00a0reported<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cAnthropology professor Caroline Jones rescheduled an exam after \u2018a slew of emails\u2019 from students describing concern about preparing for an exam set to take place right after the election results were announced,<\/strong>\u201d the newspaper reported.<\/em><\/p>\n

Another elite school, Swarthmore College, also fielded canceled classes.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the Swarthmore community came to terms with the news, an outpouring of resources flooded their inboxes,\u201d<\/strong> the\u00a0Phoenix\u00a0student newspaper\u00a0reported<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cSome professors canceled classes, the Office of Student Engagement encouraged students to use Sharples Commons as a \u2018safe space to land,\u2019 and the department of political science promoted its pre-scheduled panel discussion set for Wednesday afternoon, \u2018Election Night 2024: What Just Happened and What\u2019s to Come.’\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
