Brazil’s\u00a0Lula Undergoes Emergency Brain Surgery Following October Fall\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Far-left Brazilian President Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva underwent emergency surgery last night to drain a brain bleed connected to a fall in October, the government wrote in a statement on Tuesday morning.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Lula’s office released a statement on X, indicating the president “visited the Hospital S\u00edrio-Liban\u00eas in Bras\u00edlia last night (December 9) for imaging tests after experiencing a headache<\/strong>.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

“The magnetic resonance imaging revealed intracranial hemorrhage<\/strong>, resulting from a domestic accident that occurred on October 19,” the office said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He was then immediately transferred to Hospital S\u00edrio-Liban\u00eas, S\u00e3o Paulo unit, where doctors performed a craniotomy to drain the hematoma<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

“The surgery proceeded without complications<\/strong>. At this time, the President is doing well, under monitoring in the ICU,” the statement concluded.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The\u00a0hospital attributed the\u00a0intracranial hemorrhage to a fall he experienced at his home in mid-October<\/strong>, in which he had to cancel his\u00a0attendance at the\u00a02024 BRICS summit in Kazan, a city in southwest Russia, and his trip to the\u00a0APEC summit in Peru.<\/p>\n

Lula’s emergency surgery coincides with the Brazilian real sliding to record lows. The real fell below six to the\u00a0US dollar amid fears over the\u00a0South American country’s\u00a0public finances. The currency has been one of the worst-performing major currencies this year, depreciating by 20%.\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Lee Hardman, a senior currency analyst at MUFG,\u00a0Lula’s emergency surgery has the ability to shift\u00a0Brazil’s policy outlook and impact real:\u00a0“The real has been one of the worst performing currencies this year and that’s down to a large part driven by the loss of confidence in the fiscal policies of the current government.”\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n
