Leftist attack dog\u00a0ProPublica<\/a>\u00a0seemed unfazed by the widespread ridicule it faced on social media after its botched attempt at a smear campaign against\u00a0Pete Hegseth<\/a>\u00a0backfired.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

The publication had plotted to accuse Hegseth of falsely claiming he was accepted into West Point.\u00a0In response, Hegseth got ahead of the publication and shared his acceptance letter confirming that he had been accepted into the military academy\u2014though he declined the offer.<\/p>\n

In a now-viral tweet, Hegseth\u00a0wrote<\/a>, \u201cWe understand that ProPublica (the Left Wing hack group) is planning to publish a knowingly false report that I was not accepted to West Point in 1999.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hegseth also shared his letter of acceptance signed by Army Lieutenant General and then-West Point Superintendent Daniel Christman.\u00a0<\/p>\n

We understand that ProPublica (the Left Wing hack group) is planning to publish a knowingly false report that I was not accepted to West Point in 1999.<\/p>\n

As criticism mounted against ProPublica, its editor, Jesse Eisinger, attempted to defend the outlet but inadvertently made the situation worse. He claimed West Point had falsely informed the publication that Hegseth was never admitted to the military academy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe asked West Pt public affairs, which told us twice on the record that he hadn\u2019t even applied there,\u201d Eisinger\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0on X. \u201cWe reached out. Hegseth\u2019s spox gave us his acceptance letter. We didn\u2019t publish a story. That\u2019s journalism.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Hegseth has said that he got into West Point but didn\u2019t attend.<\/p>\n

Despite Eisinger\u2019s attempt to save face, Hegseth\u2019s defenders said the real story ProPublica should have published was that West Point had incorrectly discredited Hegseth.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Initially, ProPublica quoted West Point as stating, \u201cAccording to the admissions office \u2013 Hegseth had not applied for admission to the U.S. Military Academy.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

After being pressed for clarification, West Point admitted: \u201cA review of our records indicates that Mr. Peter Hegseth was offered admission to West Point in 1999 but did not attend West Point.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

West Point public affairs lied to ProPublica, wrongly said Pete Hegseth never even applied to the academy.<\/p>\n

Hegseth responded with a copy of his 1999 West Point acceptance letter, killing ProPublica’s story.<\/p>\n

West Point confirmed Hegseth had been offered admission for the class of 2023, issuing a statement to correct the record.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAn incorrect statement involving Mr. Hegseth\u2019s admission to the United States Military Academy was released by an employee on December 10, 2024,\u201d the academy said. \u201cUpon further review of an achieved [sic] database, employees realized this statement was in error.\u201d<\/p>\n

The academy added it was taking \u201cthis situation very seriously\u201d and issued an apology \u201cfor this administrative error.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

ProPublica\u2019s failed attempt to smear Hegseth appeared to be part of a broader campaign aimed at\u00a0thwarting<\/a>\u00a0his nomination as the next secretary of the Department of Defense.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump announced his decision to nominate Hegseth following his landslide victory in the 2024 presidential election. Despite relentless media attacks on Hegseth\u2019s personal life, the president-elect has stood by his side.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHe will be a fantastic, high energy, Secretary of Defense,\u201d Trump\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0on Truth Social earlier this month, later adding: \u201cPete is a WINNER, and there is nothing that can be done to change that!!!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
