Ex-Stripper, Convicted Killer Crystal Mangum Admits To Lying About Being Raped By Duke Lacrosse Players<\/span><\/p>\n

Crystal Mangum, a former exotic dancer who in 2006 accused three Duke University lacrosse players of raping her, acknowledged for the first time in a new interview that she made up the accusations.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Mangum had said in 2006 that the players – David Evans, Collin Finnerty, and Reade Seligmann – raped her in a house near Duke\u2019s campus during a team party at which she performed.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThey took me into my home … and they trusted me, that I wouldn\u2019t betray their trust. And I testified falsely against them by saying that they raped me when they didn\u2019t, and that was wrong,\u201d <\/strong><\/em>Mangum said<\/a> on a podcast episode released on Dec. 11.<\/p>\n

The players were arrested and charged with rape and other crimes.<\/p>\n

The case garnered national attention and the tension was fueled when former Durham County district attorney Mike Nifong said in a March 2006\u00a0interview\u00a0<\/a>with CBS News that \u201cthere\u2019s no doubt a sexual assault took place\u201d and that the assault was \u201cracially motivated.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe circumstances of the rape indicated a deep racial motivation for some of the things that were done. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

It makes a crime that is by its nature one of the most offensive and invasive even more so,\u201d said Nifong, who served as the lead prosecutor in the case.<\/em><\/p>\n

Nifong initially said that DNA would prove the players\u2019 innocence, but he reversed his statement when the tests returned negative.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Then-North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper dropped the charges after taking over the case and concluding the students were innocent.<\/p>\n

Nifong was disbarred for withholding evidence from defense lawyers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Former Duke University President Richard Brodhead, who canceled the rest of the lacrosse season and suspended the players, said<\/a> later that officials presumed the students were innocent and trusted the legal system to work but that they failed to contact the players and their families or make clear that the allegations may not have been true.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe did not get it right, causing the families to feel abandoned when they most needed support,\u201d <\/strong><\/em>he said at the time. \u201cThis was a mistake. I take responsibility for it, and I apologize.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Evans, Finnerty, and Seligmann filed a lawsuit against both Brodhead and the university, ultimately reaching an undisclosed settlement.<\/p>\n

Mangum, 42, was never charged in relation to the accusations she leveled against the players. She has been serving a prison sentence for second-degree murder after killing her boyfriend.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mangum, who said in a 2008 book that she was assaulted, said in the new interview that she \u201cmade up a story that wasn\u2019t true\u201d because she \u201cwanted validation from people and not from God.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mangum said she reads the Bible every day, relies on her faith, and is hopeful the players can forgive her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope that they can forgive me … and I hope that they can heal and trust God and know that God loves them and that God is loving them through me, letting them know that they\u2019re valuable,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> she said, adding that the players did not deserve to be falsely accused.<\/p>\n

Katerena DePasquale, who hosts the podcast that released the interview, said<\/a> in a statement that her goal was to see a person \u201cnavigating an imperfect system.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said that Mangum \u201cshared something significant and vulnerable, despite the risks involved,\u201d and called her courageous.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mangum had never publicly stated that she fabricated the rape allegation before Thursday\u2019s revelation.<\/p>\n

She can no longer be prosecuted for lying under oath since the statute of limitations on perjury charges under North Carolina law is two years.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
