Trump, SoftBank’s Masa Son Announce $100 Billion US Investment<\/span><\/p>\n

SoftBank, a Japanese tech and telecommunications conglomerate best known for top-ticking the market with its investments, will invest $100 billion in the United States over the next four years, President-elect Donald Trump announced at his Mar-a-Lago residence on Dec. 16.<\/p>\n

The Tokyo-based company will allocate the $100 billion to U.S. projects centered on artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-related infrastructure, such as energy, chips, and data centers. Trump estimated that it will create 100,000 jobs \u201cat minimum\u201d over the next four years.<\/p>\n

It aims to complete the investments before Trump finishes his second term in 2029.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis historic investment is a monumental demonstration [of] confidence in America\u2019s future,\u201d Trump, accompanied by his nominee for commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick, told reporters at a news conference.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIt will help ensure that artificial intelligence, emerging technologies, and other industries of tomorrow are built, created, and grown right here in the USA.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Masayoshi Son, the founder and CEO of SoftBank, expressed his confidence in the U.S. economy with Trump at the helm.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy confidence level in the economy of the United States has tremendously increased with his victory,\u201d <\/strong><\/em>Son said in brief remarks. \u201cSo I am truly excited to make this happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Son said that although business and technology are important, he hopes Trump will \u201cbring the world into peace again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Son and Trump said SoftBank will double the company\u2019s investment to $200 billion.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Trump is a double-down president. I\u2019m going to have to double down,\u201d <\/strong><\/em>Son said.<\/p>\n

Trump cited the dramatic increase in small business optimism.<\/p>\n

Last week, the National Federation of Independent Business\u2019s Small Business Optimism Index registered its largest monthly jump since 1980.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s unheard of, and that\u2019s the biggest they think [in] recorded history,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> the president-elect said at the Dec. 16 press conference.<\/p>\n

This, Trump said, will be the first step to \u201crestore our nation to full prosperity.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to go full prosperity and to build the greatest economy the world has ever seen, just as we had just a short time ago,\u201d <\/em><\/strong>Trump said.<\/p>\n

He also reiterated his campaign promises to slash regulations, lower corporate taxes for companies producing their products in the United States, and expedite permits for any business or individual investing $1 billion in the country.<\/p>\n

SoftBank\u2019s funding will originate from different Softbank sources, such as the Vision Fund and chipmaker Arm Holdings. The capital might not be newly raised and could come from previously announced funding, such as the company\u2019s $1.5 billion increased stake<\/a> in OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT.<\/p>\n

The Japanese juggernaut has bolstered its investments in AI. In October, at a conference in<\/a> Saudi Arabia\u2019s capital of Riyadh, Son told an audience of technology and finance leaders that AI is undervalued.<\/p>\n

He estimated that artificial intelligence will be 10,000 times smarter than a human brain and that AI data centers will demand 400 gigawatts of power by 2035. In total, Son projected that generative AI would require $9 trillion in cumulative capital expenditures per year, from chips to data centers.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s too much investment for many people\u2019s view … it\u2019s still very reasonable capex,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> Son said at the Future Investment Initiative. \u201cNine trillion dollars is not too big, maybe too small.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
