Categories have been combined from the original source and all figures are rounded. the bracket size. In 1967, fewer than 2% of American households made more than\u00a0<strong>$200,000 per year<\/strong>. In 2023, that number had risen to 15%.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, there\u2019s an increase in labor to also be accounted for. Six decades ago, only one-third of all U.S. households had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9206509\/\">all parents working<\/a>. By 2009, the situation had reversed.<\/p>\n<h2>What This Chart Doesn\u2019t Tell Us<\/h2>\n<p><em><strong>Lastly, looking at incomes is only one half of the story. It doesn\u2019t account for how prices of goods and services have changed\u00a0relative\u00a0to growing incomes.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Houses for example cost about 3x the median income in 1967, and in 2022 cost\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.visualcapitalist.com\/median-house-prices-vs-income-us\/\">nearly 6x<\/a>\u00a0the median income.<\/p>\n<p>However, the vast majority of consumer goods are much cheaper now, relative to incomes, due to how manufacturing has moved out to other parts of the world.<\/p>\n<p>Food is also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cepr.net\/in-the-good-old-days-one-fourth-of-income-went-to-food\/\">much cheaper<\/a>, dropping from 15% of household income in 1967, to around 7% in 2022 &#8211; the year when record food inflation had pushed prices up.<\/p>\n<p><em>Naturally, incomes vary quite a lot across the country.
