Foreign Jihadists Appointed To Senior Positions In New Syrian Military<\/span><\/p>\n

Foreign jihadists\u00a0have been appointed in senior positions\u00a0in the new Syrian military<\/strong>, which is now led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), an offshoot of al-Qaeda that led the offensive that ousted former President Bashar al-Assad.<\/p>\n

Syrian sources told\u00a0Reuters<\/em><\/a>\u00a0that the foreign fighters appointed to the military include Uyghurs, a Jordanian, a Turk, and an Albanian<\/strong>. “This is a small token of recognition for the sacrifices Islamist jihadists gave<\/strong> to our struggle for freedom from Assad\u2019s oppression,” an HTS source told the media outlet.<\/p>\n

Turkish citizen \u00d6mer Muhammed \u00c7ift\u00e7i, known as Muhtar T\u00fcrki, was among those elevated to Brigadier General in the new Syrian Army.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

Among the Uyghurs is Abdulaziz Dawood Khudaberdi, the commander of the Turkistan Islamic Party\u2019s (TIP) forces in Syria. The TIP\u2019s stated goal is to create an Islamic State in China\u2019s western Xinjiang region<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Khudaberdi was named a brigadier general in the Syrian military, and two other Uyghur fighters were appointed colonels.<\/p>\n

Sources told\u00a0Reuters<\/em>\u00a0that Turkish citizen Omar Mohammed Jaftashi and Jordanian citizen Abdul Rahman Hussein al-Khatib were also made brigadier-generals.<\/p>\n

Abdul Jashari, an Albanian fighter who was designated a terrorist by the US Treasury Department, was made a colonel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

HTS is still designated by the US as a foreign terrorist organization, but the Biden administration has celebrated its takeover of Syria<\/strong>. The US has also made clear it\u2019s\u00a0willing to work with the new government<\/a>\u00a0and its de facto leader, Abu Mohammad al-Julani, who has been going by his real name Ahmed al-Sharaa.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, Barbara Leaf, the US Assistant Secretary of State for Near East Affairs, met with Julani and announced the US was removing a $10 million bounty on his head.<\/p>\n

Julani, a former al-Qaeda leader, appointed other HTS members in senior positions of the “transitional government” and has said<\/a>\u00a0elections in Syria probably won\u2019t happen for at least four years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
