{"id":1512022,"date":"2025-01-06T13:35:00","date_gmt":"2025-01-06T18:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1512022"},"modified":"2025-01-06T13:35:00","modified_gmt":"2025-01-06T18:35:00","slug":"first-baltic-sea-sabotage-now-chinese-ship-suspected-of-severing-major-undersea-cable-near-taiwan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/first-baltic-sea-sabotage-now-chinese-ship-suspected-of-severing-major-undersea-cable-near-taiwan\/1512022\/","title":{"rendered":"First Baltic Sea &#8220;Sabotage,&#8221; Now Chinese Ship Suspected Of Severing Major Undersea Cable Near Taiwan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">First Baltic Sea &#8220;Sabotage,&#8221; Now Chinese Ship Suspected Of Severing Major Undersea Cable Near Taiwan<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>A little more than a month after critical undersea telecommunications cables were severed in the Baltic Sea region, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/geopolitical\/baltic-sea-fiber-cable-disruption-remains-murky-danish-coast-guard-shadows-chinese\">reportedly by a Chinese vessel<\/a>, a similar incident has unfolded just days into the new year\u2014this time off Taiwan&#8217;s northern coast.<\/p>\n<p><em>Taiwan English News<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/taiwanenglishnews.com\/undersea-cables-off-north-coast-of-taiwan-damaged-by-african-flagged-cargo-ship-with-chinese-name\/\">reported<\/a> that four core subsea telecom cables were damaged off the coast in\u00a0Yehliu, New Taipei City, on Friday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Chunghwa Telecom operates the $500 million <strong>Trans-Pacific Express<\/strong> cable network via a\u00a0joint venture between six telecom companies, including\u00a0China Telecom, China Netcom, China Unicom, Chunghwa Telecom, Korea Telecom, and Verizon Communications.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The cable connects\u00a0East Asia to the US West Coast.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2025-01-06_07-34-30.png?itok=yyT40J7a\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to Taiwan&#8217;s National Coast Guard Administration, the Chinese vessel\u00a0suspected of cutting the subsea cable just north of\u00a0Taiwan is <strong>&#8220;Shunxin 39.&#8221;<\/strong> It&#8217;s a\u00a0Cameroon-registered cargo ship.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2025-01-06_07-51-46.png?itok=0I37g3fx\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurasiantimes.com\/taiwan-investigates-suspected-chinese-ship\/\">EurAsian Times<\/a> noted that\u00a0Shunxin 39\u00a0is registered in Cameroon and\u00a0belongs to <strong>Jie Yang Trading Limited<\/strong>, a Hong Kong-based company headed by Guo Wenjie, a <strong>Chinese national<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Taiwan is investigating a suspected Chinese link to the cutting of an undersea Telecom Cable. Authorities intercepted the Shunxin-39, a Cameroon-flagged Cargo Ship, but bad weather prevented boarding, and it continued to South Korea. The Ship is linked to a Hong Kong-based\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/UO7LZxPmGg\">pic.twitter.com\/UO7LZxPmGg<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 OSINTdefender (@sentdefender) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sentdefender\/status\/1876041912437633099?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 5, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Chunghwa Telecom has since reported that <strong>data disruptions were\u00a0restored by rerouting traffic<\/strong> to other\u00a0international subsea cables.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As for the vessel, a Taiwan Coast Guard official told the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/be994bfb-7299-4334-829d-230dddbc7e25\">Financial Times<\/a><\/em>, &#8220;Since it was not possible for us to question the captain, we have asked the <strong>South Korean authorities to help with the investigation<\/strong> at the ship&#8217;s next port of destination.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The latest undersea cable-cutting incident further <strong>heightens concerns of potential sabotage<\/strong> by agents of China and or Russia,\u00a0raising alarms about hybrid warfare tactics <strong>targeting Western telecommunication infrastructure worldwide<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is <strong>another case of a very worrying global trend of sabotage against subsea cables<\/strong>,&#8221; said a senior Taiwanese national security official, adding,\u00a0&#8220;The ships that are involved in these incidents are typically rundown vessels that have little above-the-board business. This one, too, is in very bad shape.
