By 2040, this will have risen to six with the addition of Dallas,<\/strong> a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/worlddatalab.com\/cities\">release by World Data Lab shows<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chart\/34283\/cities-with-the-highest-consumer-spending-in-the-world\/\">as Statista&#8217;s Katharina Buchholz reports,<\/a> the other regions in the top 10 have been diversifying, with Japan losing ground and China gaining some, the numbers show.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chart\/34283\/cities-with-the-highest-consumer-spending-in-the-world\/\" title=\"Infographic: U.S. Consolidates Position Among Highest-Spending Cities | Statista\"><\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>You will find more infographics at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chartoftheday\/\">Statista<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Beyond the top 10, the U.S. has seen another city rising in the ranking. <\/strong>Houston is projected to climb to rank 12 in 2040, up from rank 14 in 2000.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Washington D.C., Phoenix and Seattle are also among the top 20.<\/p>\n<p><strong>While America\u2019s major metropolises are keeping their top spots, the ranking exemplifies the growing power of U.S. Sun Belt cities <\/strong>which have been attracting residents with favorable climate and lower cost of living.<\/p>\n<p>Based on a relatively strong economy, consumer spending in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/topics\/760\/united-states\/\">United States<\/a>\u00a0has persisted even through recent crises like the Covid-19 pandemic and strong inflation. Americans tend to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/blog\/best-and-worst-household-savers\">save less<\/a>\u00a0and are among the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/738695\/household-debt-gdp-globally-by-country\/\">biggest users of credit worldwide<\/a>, which might not be sustainable but still ups spending. Additionally,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/money\/24159281\/consumer-spending-economy-inflation-interest-rates\">richer Americans can still benefit<\/a>\u00a0from their pandemic savings and locked-in ultra-low mortgage rates. U.S. consumer spending is relying more and more on these rich or very rich individuals,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/economy\/consumers\/us-economy-strength-rich-spending-2c34a571\">the Wall Street Journal reports<\/a>, which the U.S.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/katharinabuchholz\/2025\/02\/28\/where-global-wealth-inequality-is-rampant-and-bound-to-increase\/\">has a lot of<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The report analyzes more than 6,000 cities on all continents. It found that <strong>83% of new consumer spending until 2040 will be urban in nature<\/strong>.
