Colorado Governor Signs New Gun Restrictions Into Law, Including Bump Stock Ban<\/span><\/p>\n

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D), signed a bill into law on April 10 requiring people to obtain a permit and undergo safety training before they buy certain guns.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The legislation also bans the purchase and sale of devices that enable guns to be fired rapidly, including bump stocks.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cFor folks who haven\u2019t had any gun safety training, it\u2019s very important that they get that, and this bill will make sure that people will get that education on how to operate the weapons safely and\u2014just as important\u2014how to store them safely,\u201d Polis said at a press conference on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Senate Bill 25-003<\/a>, the legislation, is set to take effect on Aug. 1, 2026.<\/p>\n

Under the law, people cannot buy semiautomatic rifles or semiautomatic shotguns with detachable magazines unless they\u2019ve completed hunter education training offered by the Colorado Parks and Wildlife and a \u201cbasic firearms safety course.\u201d<\/p>\n

Local sheriffs must sign off on completion of the course, with applicants also undergoing a background check and vowing not to violate state laws on guns.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Individuals who violate the law face a class 2 misdemeanor on the first offense and a felony charge on subsequent offenses.<\/p>\n

Dealers found to have violated the law shall have their licenses revoked.<\/p>\n

State Rep. Andy Boesenecke, a Democrat who co-sponsored the bill, said<\/a> in a statement after the signing that the legislation \u201cwill help save lives and prevent future tragedies in Colorado.\u201d<\/p>\n

Everytown for Gun Safety, which advocates for gun restrictions, was among the organizations praising the bill.<\/p>\n

\u201cColorado\u2019s new law is the definition of common sense: If you want to buy a military-style rifle that can kill dozens without needing to reload<\/strong>, you need to get a permit that requires passing a background check and taking a safety course,\u201d John Feinblatt, president of the group, said<\/a> in a statement.<\/p>\n

Other groups said the bill infringes on constitutional rights.<\/p>\n

Ian Escalante, executive director of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, said<\/a> in a video that the bill is \u201cthe worst, most sweeping gun restriction in U.S. history.\u201d<\/p>\n

Escalante said the group is reviewing its legal options.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not going to stand for it. We\u2019re not going to allow Jared Polis … and the legislature to force us to buy back our right to purchase the most commonly-used rifle in America,<\/strong>\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Supreme Court in 2024 struck down<\/a> a federal ban on bump stocks.<\/p>\n

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) also criticized the Colorado legislation.<\/p>\n

\u201cSB25-003 converts our constitutional rights into a privilege\u2014one that becomes only accessible to those who can afford it,\u201d she wrote<\/a> on social media platform X.<\/p>\n

Boebert and other Republicans called on the U.S. Department of Justice to sue Colorado over the law.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
