{"id":1530413,"date":"2025-04-15T06:45:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-15T10:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1530413"},"modified":"2025-04-15T06:45:00","modified_gmt":"2025-04-15T10:45:00","slug":"what-a-load-of-rubbish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/what-a-load-of-rubbish\/1530413\/","title":{"rendered":"What A Load Of Rubbish&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">What A Load Of Rubbish&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>Eight billion people in the world generate a lot of municipal garbage. <strong>By 2050, the World Bank estimates humans will generate\u00a03.4 billion tonnes\u00a0of global waste.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s enough to line up garbage trucks from the Earth to the Moon and back &#8211; several times over.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visualcapitalist.com\/a-visual-breakdown-of-global-waste-by-type\">But, as Visual Capitalist&#8217;s Marcus Lu details below,<\/a> <strong>nearly half of all that garbage is from an unexpected source. <\/strong>We breakdown all the components of solid waste from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/datatopics.worldbank.org\/what-a-waste\/trends_in_solid_waste_management.html\">World Bank data<\/a>, which uses estimates for 2016 and 2050.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/globalwaste_web.jpg?itok=Fa5-F_t8\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>What Fills the World\u2019s Trash Bins<\/h2>\n<p>Food and green waste accounts for a majority of the world\u2019s garbage (44% of the total).<\/p>\n<p>Paper and cardboard (17%)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.visualcapitalist.com\/how-much-plastic-gets-recycled\/\">and plastic<\/a>\u00a0(12%) are the next two major categories of waste.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2025-04-14_13-47-00.jpg?itok=uJBa6yN8\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>There\u2019s a positive correlation between income and waste generation. <\/strong>High-income countries account for only 16% of the world\u2019s population but more than one-third of the waste generated.<\/p>\n<p>However, it\u2019s the middle- and low-income countries that will lead to more waste generation by 2050, particularly in Asia and Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Why is this?<\/p>\n<p>As the World Bank explains, waste generation scales up as income levels rise.<\/p>\n<p>For high-income countries, per capita waste generation is already peaking, and is expected to grow 19% by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, low- and middle-income countries (where per capita waste is much lower but where incomes are rising quickly) could see their waste generation grow by 40%.<\/p>\n<p>According to the World Bank, global waste is growing at more than twice the rate of the population.<\/p>\n<p><em>Want to get more perspective on staggering food waste?
