{"id":1531532,"date":"2025-04-21T15:45:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-21T19:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1531532"},"modified":"2025-04-21T15:45:00","modified_gmt":"2025-04-21T19:45:00","slug":"chinas-oil-supertankers-slammed-with-5-2-million-fee-per-u-s-port-call","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/chinas-oil-supertankers-slammed-with-5-2-million-fee-per-u-s-port-call\/1531532\/","title":{"rendered":"China&#8217;s Oil Supertankers Slammed With $5.2 Million Fee Per U.S. Port Call"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">China&#8217;s Oil Supertankers Slammed With $5.2 Million Fee Per U.S. Port Call<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Energy\/Energy-General\/Chinas-Oil-Supertankers-Face-52-Million-Fee-per-US-Port-Call.html\"><em>Authored by Charles Kennedy via OilPrice.com,<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>The U.S. is introducing fees on operators of China-built vessels calling at U.S. ports.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>These fees could reach up to $5.2 million per call for large supertankers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The U.S. Trade Representative states the move aims to address Chinese dominance and bolster the U.S. shipbuilding industry.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The U.S. move to penalize China-built and China-owned vessels calling at U.S. ports<\/strong> could lead to an oil supertanker made in China and operated by a Chinese company facing a fee of up to $5.2 million per call at a U.S. port, shipbrokers have estimated.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/2025-04-21_mc5mkco7bo.jpg?itok=WOTSxaX5\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The U.S. last week\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ustr.gov\/about\/policy-offices\/press-office\/press-releases\/2025\/april\/ustr-section-301-action-chinas-targeting-maritime-logistics-and-shipbuilding-sectors-dominance\">announced<\/a>\u00a0fees on vessel owners and operators of China based on net tonnage per U.S. voyage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The previous proposal was a per-port-entry fee of up to $1.5 million on Chinese-built vessels, and up to a $1 million per-port-entry fee on any vessel (Chinese-built or non-Chinese-built) for operators that have any Chinese-built vessels in their fleet or orderbook.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) plans to impose fees on operators of Chinese-built ships based on net tonnage or containers, increasing incrementally over the following years.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the new USTR move, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said, \u201cShips and shipping are vital to American economic security and the free flow of commerce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cThe Trump administration\u2019s actions will begin to reverse Chinese dominance, address threats to the U.S. supply chain, and send a demand signal for U.S.-built ships,\u201d <\/strong><\/em>Greer added.<\/p>\n<p>Under the new plan, the fee on a China-made China-operated supertanker could reach up to $5.2 million per call because of the large tonnage of the supertankers compared to smaller oil tankers, according to the research arm of Arrow Shipbroking Group cited by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-04-21\/china-owned-supertankers-face-5-2-million-in-fees-per-us-call?embedded-checkout=true\">Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The previous per-call only fee would have charged up to $3.5 million for a tanker to call at a U.S. port.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oil traders have already started to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oilprice.com\/Energy\/Energy-General\/Oil-Traders-Shun-Chinese-Tankers-as-Trump-Prepares-Port-Fees.html\">avoid hiring tankers<\/a>\u00a0built in China amid concerns that port fees could be coming for Chinese vessels at U.S. ports as part of a plan by President Donald Trump to revitalize the American shipbuilding industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oil traders and charterers that are booking vessels to call, load, or discharge cargoes at U.S. ports are seeking vessels not built in China, <\/strong>market sources told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-04-03\/oil-traders-shun-china-made-ships-for-us-flows-on-trump-levies\">Bloomberg<\/a>\u00a0earlier this month.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>      <span class=\"field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden\"><a title=\"View user profile.\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/users\/tyler-durden\" class=\"username\">Tyler Durden<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden\">Mon, 04\/21\/2025 &#8211;
