“We Need An Uprising”: Democratic Rep. Calls On People To “Threaten” Congress And “Take To The Streets”<\/span><\/p>\n

U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Fla., is the latest Democratic politician to use\u00a0rage rhetoric<\/a>\u00a0to rally voters despite an alarming increase in political violence on the left.<\/strong> Calling for an \u201cuprising,\u201d Wilson also lashed out at the Laken Riley Act.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Wilson was visiting the ICE Krome Detention Center in Miami and\u00a0declared<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I\u2019ve been giving out the phone numbers to the House of Representatives and to the Senate. It\u2019s one number that number you call and you threaten it, and you say, this is wrong. This is not America. This is not what we stand for. We need a change. You have to do that. It\u2019s going to take the people. We\u2019ve done it.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

We need the people. We needed an uprising where people are taking to the streets <\/strong>and the phones and writing letters. That\u2019s what we need.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

She is not alone.<\/p>\n

Rep. Maxine Waters (D., Cal.) said \u201cWe are here to fight back.\u201d <\/strong><\/em>Sen. Cory Booker (D., NJ) called on citizens to \u201cfight\u201d and declared \u201cWe will rise up<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not to be outdone in the rage fest, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D., TX) yelled, \u201cWe are gonna be in your face, we are gonna be on your a\u2013es, and we are going to make sure you understand what democracy looks like, and this ain\u2019t it.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Rep. LaMonica McIver (D., N.J.) added: \u201cGod d\u2014it shut down the Senate!\u2026WE ARE AT WAR!\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., called for Democrats to fight\u00a0 \u201cin the streets<\/a>.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

In my recent\u00a0book<\/em><\/a>, I discuss the role of rage rhetoric in our politics extending back to the very beginning of the Republic. The danger is that it can give a license to some for political violence, including those who claim that they are now\u00a0triggered by everything from candidates to cars<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Wilson also lashed out at the Laken Riley Act and complained that:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Laken Riley Act has caused an increase in detainees, and these are people who have\u2026 you could have been here forever\u2026 walking across the street, jaywalking, or shoplifting, they will detain you and bring you right here.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

First, the Laken Riley Act was enacted to increase such arrests. It does not cover jaywalking.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The highly popular law allows the detention of illegal immigrants accused of theft-related crimes, assaulting a police officer, or a crime that results in death or serious bodily injury, including drunk driving.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Twelve Democratic senators<\/a>\u00a0voted for the Act.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
