‘They Lied To A Whole Generation of Kids’<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got $1.7 trillion in student debt on the books and we\u2019ve got 7.6 million open jobs right now – most of which don\u2019t require a 4-year degree<\/strong>,\u201d says a frustrated Mike Rowe in his ubiquitously velvetty tones.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd we\u2019ve got 6.8 million able-bodied men who are not only out of the workforce<\/strong>, they\u2019re not looking.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

It’s generational, Rowe tells Theo Von. It’s not about the pay, he adds, noting that there’s no enthusiam for the work:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe took shop class out of high school, we robbed kids of the opportunity to see what that kind of work even looks like.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cMeanwhile,” Rowe continues:<\/p>\n

“we told a whole generation of kids they were f**king screwed if they didn\u2019t get a 4-year degree.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cHow did college get so expensive?”<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

“Nothing has gotten more expensive in the last 40 years than a 4-year degree. Not real estate, not healthcare, not energy, nothing.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWe keep telling kids they\u2019re screwed if they don\u2019t go in this direction. We free up endless money to loan them.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

But the solution is not simple:<\/p>\n

\u201cSomething beyond the tariffs, something beyond policy is gonna have to happen to make 22-year old go, yeah, I would consider\u201d learning a trade.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
