The AfD’s Views On Nationality Actually Aren’t Extremist At All<\/span><\/p>\n

They\u2019ve been shared by the vast majority of humanity throughout history in their own contexts…<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Germany\u2019s domestic intelligence agency designated the AfD, just\u00a0topped a recent poll<\/a>\u00a0as the country\u2019s most popular party, as \u201cextremist<\/strong>\u201d before\u00a0withdrawing<\/a>\u00a0it pending litigation. This label would legitimize surveillance of them<\/strong> and can set the pretext for banning them. Vice President JD Vance\u00a0condemned<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>this earlier move as equivalent to building a new Berlin Wall while Secretary of State Marco Rubio called on Germany to reverse its decision\u00a0and<\/a>\u00a0also end its \u201cdangerous open border immigration policies\u201d.<\/p>\n

Lost amidst a lot of the debate over this controversial decision is\u00a0the basis upon which it was made<\/a>: \u201cThe party’s prevailing understanding of the people based on ethnicity and descent is incompatible with the free democratic basic order.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The AfD believes that ethnic Germans have a special connection to their country due to their shared culture and experiences, which non-ethnic German citizens lack, especially those from civilizationally dissimilar societies across the Global South who only recently arrived there.<\/p>\n

These views actually aren\u2019t extremist at all since they\u2019ve been shared by the vast majority of humanity throughout history in their own contexts. In fact, they\u2019re still popular in non-Western societies<\/strong>, the same places from which most of Germany\u2019s non-ethnic-German population originates. From Africa to West Asia and the Indo-Pacific, most of these countries believe that original inhabitants have a special connection to their country, which can take several generations for newcomers\u2019 descendants to share.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s only the\u00a0radical liberal-globalist ideology<\/a>\u00a0espoused by the Western elites that denies this special connection or pretends that it\u2019s always shared by all newcomers once they step onto foreign soil.<\/strong> To be clear, acknowledging this special connection doesn\u2019t imply that members of non-titular nationalities who obtain another country\u2019s citizenship don\u2019t deserve any rights, rather it\u2019s meant as a safeguard of the titular nationality\u2019s socio-cultural rights. It\u2019s here where the Russian example is instructive.<\/p>\n

One of the constitutional amendments that entered into force after 2020\u2019s referendum\u00a0stipulates<\/a>\u00a0that \u201cThe state language of the Russian Federation throughout its territory is the Russian language as the language of the state-forming people, part of the multinational union of equal peoples of the Russian Federation.\u201d It reaffirmed the equality of all Russian citizens while emphasizing the role that ethnic Russians and their language have historically played in forming their cosmopolitan\u00a0civilization-state<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Separately, legislation was passed\u00a0mandating<\/a>\u00a0that foreigners pass tests on Russian language, history, and legal basics in order to obtain long-term permission to reside in Russia, let alone citizenship. This is meant to mitigate the socio-cultural threat posed by those who refuse to assimilate and integrate<\/strong>, which Patriarch Kirill drew attention to on three occasions in 2023 and 2024\u00a0here<\/a>,\u00a0here<\/a>, and\u00a0here<\/a>. He and Putin, however, also united in\u00a0condemning ethno-religious hate speech<\/a>\u00a0after the\u00a0Crocus terrorist attack<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What the Russian example shows is that a titular nationality\u2019s special connection to their country can be recognized without doing so at the expense of other nationalities. The same goes for having policies for ensuring that migrants assimilate and integrate. None of this is \u201cextremist\u201d; it\u2019s respectful, pragmatic, and sensible, which is why the AfD wants the same in Germany. <\/strong>These views on nationality are the historical norm for humanity, not the exception, which makes the liberal-globalists the real extremists.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
