Nearby Santa Cruz County also lists six figures as low income, though it\u2019s not adjacent to the Bay.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The income figures are used to determine residents\u2019 eligibility for certain programs, such as housing assistance.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/image%20-%202025-05-12T125858.890.jpg?itok=0mR7vIKF\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/a-six-figure-income-is-considered-low-in-some-bay-area-counties-5855656?utm_source=partner&amp;utm_campaign=ZeroHedge\">As Connor Lee reports for The Epoch Times,<\/a> <strong>low income is usually 80 percent of median family income,<\/strong> although the number may be adjusted based on other factors, the report states.<\/p>\n<p>In Santa Clara County, the threshold listed for low income is $111,700 a year, the highest in the state.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This figure reflects its highest-in-the-state median income of nearly $200,000, up by more than $10,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcd.ca.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/docs\/grants-and-funding\/income-limits-2024.pdf\">from<\/a>\u00a02024.<\/p>\n<p>In Sacramento County, by contrast, $72,050 is considered low income.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The low-income figure is $84,850 in Los Angeles County and $54,500 in Shasta County.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cWhen a six-figure income qualifies as low income, it\u2019s a clear sign that too many Californians are struggling to make ends meet,\u201d <\/em><\/strong>said Chris Hoene, executive director of the California Budget &amp; Policy Center, in an emailed statement to The Epoch Times.<\/p>\n<p>According to the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, households that spend over 30 percent of their income on housing costs such as rent and mortgage are considered \u201ccost-burdened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the city of Santa Clara, more than\u00a052 percent of renter households are cost-burdened, and so are over a quarter of homeowner households, <a href=\"https:\/\/siliconvalleyathome.org\/resources\/santa-clara\/\">according<\/a> to housing organization Silicon Valley at Home.<\/p>\n<p>Californians often face a heavier cost burden because the state\u2019s rent and home prices are significantly higher than in most of the nation.<\/p>\n<p>Hoene said that the state\u2019s high cost of living is driven by \u201csoaring housing costs and rising prices on basic needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>California <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bea.gov\/news\/2024\/real-personal-consumption-expenditures-state-and-real-personal-income-state-and\">currently<\/a>\u00a0has the highest regional price parity in the nation, at 12.6 percent higher than the national average, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Housing rent in the state is 57.8 percent above the national average, the bureau reported.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mid-tier homes in California are more than twice as expensive as typical mid-tier U.S. homes,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/lao.ca.gov\/LAOEconTax\/Article\/Detail\/793\">according<\/a>\u00a0to the Legislative Analyst\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n<p>A bottom-tier home in California is more expensive than a mid-tier home in the rest of the country.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The average <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zillow.com\/home-values\/20330\/san-francisco-ca\/\">home<\/a> value in San Francisco was priced at more than $1.3 million<\/strong> as of February, according to Zillow.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>      <span class=\"field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden\"><a title=\"View user profile.\" href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/users\/tyler-durden\" class=\"username\">Tyler Durden<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden\">Mon, 05\/12\/2025 &#8211;
