{"id":1535794,"date":"2025-05-13T12:55:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-13T16:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1535794"},"modified":"2025-05-13T12:55:00","modified_gmt":"2025-05-13T16:55:00","slug":"unitedhealth-group-shares-plunge-on-abrupt-ceo-exit-suspends-2025-outlook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/unitedhealth-group-shares-plunge-on-abrupt-ceo-exit-suspends-2025-outlook\/1535794\/","title":{"rendered":"UnitedHealth Group Shares Plunge On Abrupt CEO Exit, Suspends 2025 Outlook"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">UnitedHealth Group Shares Plunge On Abrupt CEO Exit, Suspends 2025 Outlook<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>Shares of UnitedHealth Group tumbled in premarket trading after the insurer announced the sudden resignation of CEO Andrew Witty and the suspension of its 2025 financial outlook.<\/p>\n<p>UnitedHealth Group appointed Stephen Hemsley, its board chairman and former CEO (2006-2017), as its new CEO, replacing Andrew Witty, who stepped down for personal reasons.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are grateful for Andrew&#8217;s stewardship of UnitedHealth Group, especially during some of the most challenging times any company has ever faced,&#8221; Hemsley <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedhealthgroup.com\/newsroom\/2025\/2025-05-13-uhg-announces-leadership-transition.html\">said<\/a>, adding, &#8220;The Board and I have greatly valued his leadership and compassion as chief executive and as a director and wish him and his family the best.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The major health insurer also suspended its\u00a02025 financial outlook, citing\u00a0higher-than-expected medical expenditures:<\/p>\n<p><em>Additionally, the company suspended its 2025 outlook as care activity continued to accelerate while also broadening to more types of benefit offerings than seen in the first quarter, and the medical costs of many Medicare Advantage beneficiaries new to UnitedHealthcare remained higher than expected.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In April,\u00a0UnitedHealth Group reported\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/markets\/unitedhealth-stock-dumps-earnings-miss-outlook-downgrade\">weaker-than-expected<\/a> Q1 results and issued a significant downward revision to its full-year guidance, citing higher-than-expected Medicare needs. This was the insurer&#8217;s first earnings miss in over a decade.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>UnitedHealth Group expects\u00a0to return to growth in 2026&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;UnitedHealth Group has tremendous opportunities to grow as we continue to help improve health care and to perform to our potential \u2014 and, in so doing, return to our long-term growth objective of 13 to 16 percent,&#8221; the new CEO said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As of Monday&#8217;s close, UnitedHealth Group shares are locked in a bear market, down 25% for the year. News of the sudden CEO resignation and suspended outlook pushed the stock down another 10% in premarket trading\u2014sending shares to a four-year low if losses hold into the cash session.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Just to clarify<\/strong>:\u00a0UnitedHealthcare is the health benefits business of UnitedHealth Group.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/Snag_8b865ea6_0.png?itok=Z-28krbc\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In premarket trading, the shares of peers Elevance Health, CVS Health, and Humana all fell between 2 and 4%.\u00a0Cigna and Centene fell between 1% and 2%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here are the first takes on the news via Wall Street banks (courtesy of Bloomberg):<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mizuho, Ann Hynes (outperform)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Says the suspension of the guidance is surprising<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Given the recent challenges the company has faced, a change in management was expected&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Leerink Partners, Whit Mayo (outperform) <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Says the suspension of the 2025 guide due to a continuation of excessively high care activity &#8220;is more concerning and likely to weigh considerably on forward forecasts and the valuation&#8221;
