{"id":1537396,"date":"2025-05-21T22:50:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-22T02:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1537396"},"modified":"2025-05-21T22:50:00","modified_gmt":"2025-05-22T02:50:00","slug":"usda-approves-nebraskas-banning-soda-and-energy-drinks-from-food-stamps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/usda-approves-nebraskas-banning-soda-and-energy-drinks-from-food-stamps\/1537396\/","title":{"rendered":"USDA Approves Nebraska&#8217;s Banning Soda And Energy Drinks From Food Stamps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">USDA Approves Nebraska&#8217;s Banning Soda And Energy Drinks From Food Stamps<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins issued a waiver on May 19 restricting the use of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funds to buy soda or energy drinks in Nebraska, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) said in a May 19 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usda.gov\/about-usda\/news\/press-releases\/2025\/05\/19\/secretary-rollins-approves-first-ever-state-waiver-restrict-soda-and-energy-drinks-food-stamps\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/image%20%2824%29_7.jpg?itok=Jghmc7Zl\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is the first-ever state waiver banning soda and energy drinks from SNAP, popularly known as food stamps.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cPrior to this waiver, SNAP recipients could buy anything except alcohol, tobacco, hot foods, and personal care products,\u201d <\/strong><\/em>said the statement.<\/p>\n<p>The waiver, which takes effect on Jan. 1, 2026, is part of the Trump administration\u2019s Make America Healthy Again agenda, the USDA said, adding that this \u201chistoric action seeks to reverse alarming disease trends across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/usda-approves-nebraskas-banning-soda-and-energy-drinks-from-food-stamps-5860488?utm_source=partner&amp;utm_campaign=ZeroHedge\"><em>As Naveen Athrappully reports via The Epoch Times,<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em><strong>one in three children between the ages of 12 and 19 is affected by prediabetes,<\/strong> it said. Forty percent of school-aged children and adolescents suffer from at least one chronic condition, while 15 percent of students in high school drink a minimum of one soda per day.<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/trump-establishes-make-america-healthy-again-commission-5809872\">signed<\/a> an executive order in February establishing the President\u2019s Commission to Make America Healthy Again. The agency is tasked with investigating the \u201croot causes of America\u2019s escalating health crisis,\u201d including chronic disease among children, according to a White House fact sheet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The waiver issued to Nebraska \u201cis the first of its kind, and it is a historic step to Make America Healthy Again,\u201d <\/strong>Rollins said. \u201cUnder President Trump\u2019s leadership, I have encouraged states to serve as the \u2018laboratories of innovation.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The American Beverage Association, a trade group representing the non-alcoholic beverage industry, has consistently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanbeverage.org\/initiatives-advocacy\/protecting-consumer-choice\/protecting-snap-beverage-choice\/\">opposed<\/a> the move to remove soda and energy drinks from the SNAP program, citing a violation of people\u2019s right to \u201cbeverage choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cMillions of Americans rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to help feed their families. They deserve the same freedom to choose the foods and beverages that best fit their needs,\u201d it said.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cRestricting products\u2014like soda\u2014from SNAP won\u2019t make anyone healthier or save a $1 in taxpayer spending. Instead, restrictions will only grow government bureaucracy and costs while creating a slippery slope to government deciding \u2018good\u2019 and \u2018bad\u2019 foods.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Obesity Driver?<\/h2>\n<p>In February, Rollins had raised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/usda-chief-says-americans-on-food-stamps-could-be-banned-from-buying-sugary-drinks-5812072\">concerns<\/a> about the inclusion of sugary drinks in the SNAP program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen a taxpayer is putting money into SNAP, are we OK with us using their tax dollars to feed really bad food and sugary drinks to children who perhaps need something more nutritious?\u201d she told reporters at the White House on Feb. 14.<\/p>\n<p>A 2016 <a href=\"https:\/\/fns-prod.azureedge.us\/sites\/default\/files\/ops\/SNAPFoodsTypicallyPurchased.pdf\">report<\/a> from the USDA had shown that soft drinks were the No. 1 food commodity that SNAP households spent their money on.<\/p>\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the obesity rate in the United States was 40.3 percent during the 2021\u20132023 period. Health researchers have long blamed sugary drinks for obesity as well as health issues such as cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The American Beverage Association rejects such claims, saying beverages cannot be blamed for driving up obesity.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhile CDC data shows adult obesity is up 37.4 percent since 2000, full-calorie soda sales are down 22.9 percent and beverage calories per serving are down 42 percent,\u201d it said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIf the two were connected, obesity rates should have decreased with the decline in soda consumption.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIn fact, calories from sugar-sweetened beverages are a small part of the American diet. When consumption of all sugar-sweetened beverages are combined, they account for less than 6 percent of calories in the American diet.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Besides Nebraska, other states are also taking action against SNAP soda sales.
