The U.S. is one of the\u00a0highest-paying<\/a>\u00a0countries globally, but the average earnings differ significantly between industries.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This infographic, via Visual Capitalist’s Niccolo Conte, <\/a>ranks average annual salaries across major U.S. industries using data from the U.S.\u00a0Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a>\u00a0as of March 2025. The data covers private industries, and annual salary figures are estimated by multiplying average weekly earnings by 52.<\/p>\n

Which Industries Pay the Most?<\/h2>\n

The average annual salary across all U.S. industries (ex. government employees) is around\u00a0$64,000<\/strong>. In the utilities sector, the highest-paying industry, the average employee makes nearly\u00a0$114,000<\/strong>\u00a0annually.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a look at the highest and lowest-paying industries in America:<\/p>\n

The BLS updates earnings data on a monthly basis. The above figures are based on data from the March 2025 release.<\/em><\/p>\n

The utilities sector includes occupations related to electric power generation, including wind turbine technicians and solar photovoltaic installers\u2014the two\u00a0fastest-growing jobs<\/a>\u00a0of the next decade.<\/p>\n

The information industry, which includes all types of software and computer-related jobs, ranks second with nearly\u00a0$100,000<\/strong>\u00a0in average annual earnings. It\u2019s also among the most\u00a0profitable industries<\/a>\u00a0for companies in America.<\/p>\n

Mining\/logging and financial activities have nearly equivalent average pay of just over\u00a0$92,000<\/strong>\u00a0per year. Other well-paying industries include professional services, construction, wholesale trade, and manufacturing\u2014each paying more than the $64,000 average across all industries.<\/p>\n

On the other end of the wage spectrum, the leisure and hospitality sector has the lowest average salary of around $30,000 per year. The retail trade industry, the second-biggest by number of employees, is also among the lowest-paying with around $39,000 in average annual salary.<\/p>\n

Which Industries Are Adding the Most Jobs?<\/h2>\n

Over the 12 months ended April 2025, the private education and health services industry\u00a0added<\/a>\u00a0894,000<\/strong>\u00a0jobs, with about\u00a070%<\/strong>\u00a0of these additions being in the healthcare segment.<\/p>\n

The leisure and hospitality sector followed with\u00a0225,000<\/strong>\u00a0new jobs, followed by transportation and warehousing (151,000) and construction (143,000).<\/p>\n

Employment in the public sector also increased by 322,000 employees, although the Federal government shed 6,000 jobs.<\/p>\n
