Hernandez, a male high school student in Southern California who identifies as transgender, <strong>won the high jump and triple jump and placed second in the long jump<\/strong> at the California high school track and field championship, competing in the girls\u2019 division.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The event took place after the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), which governs the state\u2019s high school sports, <a href=\"https:\/\/cifstate.org\/news\/2025_TF_follow-up_5.28.25\">changed<\/a> its rules on May 28. <\/strong>Under the new rule, a \u201cbiological female student-athlete\u201d who would have earned a particular placement in track events would still receive the placement and medal she qualified for.<\/p>\n<p>Following the rule changes, Hernandez shared first place in the high jump with co-winners Jillene Wetteland and Lelani Laruelle, and in the triple jump with Kira Gant Hatcher, who trailed by just more than a half-meter.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe CIF values all of our student-athletes and we will continue to uphold our mission of providing students with the opportunity to belong, connect, and compete while complying with California law and Education Code,\u201d the organization <a href=\"https:\/\/cifstate.org\/news\/2025_TF_follow-up_5.28.25\">said<\/a> in a May 28 statement.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The statement came after Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us\/trump-threatens-to-pull-federal-funding-if-california-allows-men-to-compete-in-womens-sports-5864092\">warned<\/a> California on May 27 that \u201clarge scale\u201d federal funding would be withheld, \u201cmaybe permanently,\u201d if the state does not comply with his Feb. 5 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/02\/keeping-men-out-of-womens-sports\/\">executive order<\/a> that banned\u00a0male students who identify as female from competing in girls\u2019 sports.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump criticized California Gov. Gavin Newsom for allowing a male athlete to compete against female athletes at an event.<\/p>\n<p>He stated that the male athlete \u201cwon everything\u201d and advanced to the state finals. Trump did not name the athlete, but it was widely presumed to be Hernandez.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cAs a Male, he was a less than average competitor.
