Border Czar Homan Says Trump Admin Has ‘No Intention’ To Arrest Newsom<\/span><\/p>\n

White House border czar Tom Homan said on Monday that he has \u201cno intention to arrest\u201d California Gov. Gavin Newsom after the Democratic governor dared him to arrest him as protests and riots persist in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

Homan told<\/a> CBS News that talk about arresting Newsom has \u201cbeen taken out of context\u201d and that Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass \u201chaven\u2019t crossed a line yet.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cIf you cross that line, I don\u2019t care who they are\u2014the governor, the mayor, whatever\u2014and when you commit a crime against ICE officers, we will seek prosecution,\u201d <\/strong><\/em>Homan added, referring to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.<\/p>\n

In another interview with NewsNation, Homan said that \u201cthere is no threat to arrest Gov. Newsom\u201d but that a previous comment about arresting anybody who impedes ICE efforts to enforce laws against illegal immigrants still stands.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf he crosses that line of impeding ICE enforcement efforts, if he knowingly harbors and conceals an alien, that\u2019s a crime,\u201d he told the outlet.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWe would ask \u2026 the attorney general to seek prosecution,\u201d <\/strong>he added. \u201cMy words were taken out of context, but it is what it is.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

At one point on Sunday, Newsom was asked by an NBC News reporter about the possibility of being arrested. \u201cCome and get me, tough guy,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n

And when a reporter at the White House asked President Donald Trump on Monday about Newsom being arrested by Homan, the president said, \u201cI’d do it if I were Tom,\u201d adding: \u201cGavin likes the publicity, but I think it would be a great thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Trump administration and Newsom have been sharply critical of one another in the handling of unrest in Los Angeles over the past several days, which was sparked by protests against ICE efforts across the city. Trump and Homan have said that Newsom hasn\u2019t been able to quell the violence, prompting the president to deploy the National Guard and Marines over the past several days.<\/p>\n

In response, Newsom said that the troop deployments are a form of overreach and that Trump\u2019s actions are an incitement to more violence. The state\u2019s attorney general, Rob Bonta, filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over the deployment on Monday.<\/p>\n

Newsom said<\/a> that the deployment of Marines, which was confirmed<\/a> by U.S. Northern Command on Monday, is a form of escalation that he described as \u201ccompletely unwarranted, uncalled for, and unprecedented.\u201d<\/p>\n

Homan has told media outlets that ICE agents were serving criminal search warrants at a Los Angeles worksite last week as part of a probe into customs fraud, tax evasion, and money laundering.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Speaking to the \u201cDr. Phil\u201d show, Homan said<\/a> that 41 people were arrested and that the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration, and Internal Revenue Service were also involved.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe took a lot of bad people off the street that day,\u201d he told<\/a> NewsNation in another interview, adding that those enforcement measures were \u201ctargeted\u201d instead of being a random sweep.<\/p>\n

In a directive on Saturday, Trump invoked a legal provision allowing him to deploy federal service members when there is \u201ca rebellion or danger of a rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Northern Command said in its Monday statement that the 700 or so Marines \u201cwill seamlessly integrate\u201d with troops \u201cwho are protecting federal personnel and federal property in the greater Los Angeles area.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Monday\u2019s demonstrations were far less raucous, with thousands peacefully attending a rally at City Hall and hundreds protesting outside a federal complex, which includes a detention center where some illegal immigrants are being held following workplace operations across the city.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
