The sharpest declines came post-1960s, but the downward trend continues in the modern era.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Are Fertility Rates Falling?<\/h2>\n<p>Declining fertility rates are tied to a range of factors: economic pressures, access to contraception, shifts in social norms, delayed marriage and childbirth, and more women pursuing higher education and careers.<\/p>\n<p>This broader trend reflects a transformation in how, when, and if Americans choose to have children.<\/p>\n<h3>Births Are Shifting to Older Age Groups<\/h3>\n<p>An important dynamic behind this trend is the shifting age profile of new mothers.<\/p>\n<p>As of 2005, women aged 25\u201329 had the highest birth rates, at 116.5 births per 1,000 women. By 2023, the peak had shifted to the 30\u201334 age group, which logged 95.1 births per 1,000 women.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/fertility-rates-of-us-women-at-d.jpg?itok=2YPxWrS3\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Between 2005 and 2023, fertility declined for women under 35, while increasing for those 35 and older.
