6 Policies That Could Be Affected by Supreme Court’s Decision On Nationwide Injunctions<\/span><\/p>\n

The Supreme Court on June 27 handed down a decision<\/a> restricting federal judges\u2019 ability to impose nationwide injunctions against executive policies, a ruling that was immediately hailed by President Donald Trump as a win for his administration.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

Justice Amy Coney Barrett delivered the opinion of the court, writing, \u201cThese injunctions\u2014known as \u2018universal injunctions\u2019\u2014likely exceed the equitable authority that Congress has granted to federal courts.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

In comments at a White House press conference<\/a>, Trump praised the decision as \u201camazing,\u201d saying it is \u201cone we\u2019re very happy about.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis morning, the Supreme Court has delivered a monumental victory for the Constitution, separation of powers, and the rule of law,\u201d <\/strong><\/em>Trump said.<\/p>\n

The decision comes as judicial injunctions\u2014which can sometimes take the form of prohibitions on a specific policy or federal goal\u2014have threatened Trump\u2019s ability to execute a series of policies pursued by his administration.<\/p>\n

Here are six policies that could be affected by the ruling.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Funding for Sanctuary Cities<\/h2>\n

In February, a federal judge in San Francisco blocked implementation of an executive order targeting federal funding for \u201csanctuary cities,\u201d describing cities that flout federal immigration law and refuse to assist federal agents in enforcing immigration law.<\/p>\n

The judge at the time said this push violated the Tenth Amendment by imposing \u201ccoercive conditions intended to commandeer local officials into enforcing federal immigration practices and law.\u201d<\/p>\n

After Trump signed the order, Attorney General Pam Bondi issued a directive<\/a> in February for implementing the funding cut.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo protect the American people from the effects of unlawful mass migration, President Trump has prioritized securing our Nation\u2019s borders and enforcing federal immigration laws,\u201d the directive read. \u201cIn furtherance of that objective, the Department of Justice will ensure that, consistent with law, \u2019sanctuary jurisdictions\u2019 do not receive access to Federal funds from the Department.\u201d<\/p>\n

Voter ID<\/h2>\n

Trump could also now be able to push ahead with a stalled effort to overhaul U.S. election law through an executive<\/a> order that would require states to impose stronger voter ID and proof of citizenship requirements.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe United States has not adequately enforced Federal election requirements that, for example, prohibit States from counting ballots received after Election Day or prohibit non-citizens from registering to vote,\u201d the order said.<\/p>\n

It was halted by federal judges in Massachusetts and Washington after 19 states sued.<\/p>\n

$3 Trillion Funding Freeze<\/h2>\n

Another policy that could be affected was an effort by Trump to freeze upwards of $3 trillion in funding and grants to states while they were reviewed for alignment with the administration\u2019s goals and policies.<\/p>\n

Twenty-three states sued to block the policy. They were granted favorable rulings, which the government has appealed, by federal judges in Washington and Rhode Island.<\/p>\n

The attempted funding freeze comes as part of Trump\u2019s larger effort to reduce federal spending and ensure that such spending aligns with the goals of his administration.<\/p>\n

Public School DEI Programs<\/h2>\n

Another policy that could now be permitted to move ahead centers around diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in public schools.<\/p>\n

The administration, through the Department of Education, has ordered public schools to end such programs or risk losing their share of around $75 billion in federal public school funding.<\/p>\n

Judges in three jurisdictions\u2014New Hampshire, Maryland, and Washington\u2014blocked the effort.<\/p>\n

Taxpayer Transgender Funding<\/h2>\n

Another policy that could be back in play is an effort by Trump to block federal funding for medical providers who perform transgender-related procedures on individuals below the age of 19.<\/p>\n

In a Jan. 28 executive<\/a> order, Trump said that the United States \u201cwill not fund, sponsor, promote, assist, or support the so-called \u2019transition’ of a child from one sex to another,\u201d defined as any individual 18 years or younger.<\/p>\n

A Baltimore-based federal judge placed an injunction on enforcing the policy in March.<\/p>\n

USAID Funding<\/h2>\n

Finally, the Supreme Court decision could permit Trump to move ahead with his administration\u2019s efforts to effectively end the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and wrap the agency into the State Department.<\/p>\n

USAID has been accused of using U.S. taxpayer funding to\u00a0advance progressive causes domestically and internationally. Trump froze nearly $2 billion for the government body early in his term.<\/p>\n

A Washington judge ordered Trump to resume the payments.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
