{"id":1544801,"date":"2025-07-02T00:55:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-02T04:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/?p=1544801"},"modified":"2025-07-02T00:55:00","modified_gmt":"2025-07-02T04:55:00","slug":"ca-republicans-urge-amnesty-for-illegal-immigrants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bugaluu.com\/news\/ca-republicans-urge-amnesty-for-illegal-immigrants\/1544801\/","title":{"rendered":"CA Republicans Urge Amnesty For Illegal Immigrants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">CA Republicans Urge Amnesty For Illegal Immigrants<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>Authored by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/users\/profile\/Kenneth%20Schrupp\">Kenneth Schrupp<\/a>\u00a0via\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/california\/article_fdb38942-24c7-4b46-af4e-792c0e59377b.html\">The Center Square<\/a>,<\/p>\n<p>Six California Republican state lawmakers sent a\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sr23.senate.ca.gov\/sites\/sr23.senate.ca.gov\/files\/250627%20Immigration%20Letter_POTUS.pdf\">letter<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to President Donald Trump urging Immigration and Customs Enforcement to avoid \u201csweeping raids\u201d and create \u201ca path to legal status\u201d for \u201cnon-criminal undocumented immigrants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe have heard from employers in our districts that recent ICE raids are not only targeting\u00a0undocumented workers, but also creating widespread fear among other employees, including those with legal immigration status,\u201d wrote the lawmakers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cWe urge you to direct ICE and DHS to focus their enforcement operations on criminal immigrants, and when possible to avoid the kinds of sweeping raids that instill fear and disrupt the workplace.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Signatories included state Sen. Minority Leader Brian Jones, R-San Diego. Jones\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/california\/article_944ae583-a303-4ffe-9988-5195f9fafd42.html\">authored<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0a bill that failed in committee that would have required the prisons and jails in California to provide requested release dates to federal immigration officials for individuals convicted of serious or violent felonies or wobblers\u00a0 \u2014 crimes serious enough to be prosecuted as either a felony or a misdemeanor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.zerohedge.com\/s3\/files\/inline-images\/AP21161597281602-scaled-e1623443.jpg?itok=YqNz_jRO\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Under existing state law, such cooperation is prohibited except in limited cases involving some serious or violent crimes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe also call on your leadership to modernize our immigration process to allow non-criminal\u00a0undocumented immigrants with longstanding ties to our communities a path toward legal status,\u201d\u00a0the letter continued. \u201cAmerica needs a system that reflects both compassion and lawfulness \u2014 one that upholds\u00a0sovereignty while recognizing the reality on the ground.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cThe last President to successfully tackle this issue was Ronald Reagan nearly 40 years ago, and it is long past time to modernize our immigration policies,\u201d<\/strong> the lawmakers wrote.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Reagan\u2019s 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/guides.loc.gov\/latinx-civil-rights\/irca\">allowed<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0approximately three million undocumented immigrants who had continuously resided in the United States since before Jan. 1, 1982, to secure legal status.\u00a0The last time a Republican presidential candidate won California was 1988 when Vice President George H.W. Bush was elected president.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFinally, we urge you to expand and reform the H-2A and H-2B visa programs to authorize more legal guest workers across the entire economy, and to streamline the process to make it easier for vital industries to get the workers they need,\u201d wrote the lawmakers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cFrom construction to hospitality to food processing, California\u2019s employers are struggling to fill positions.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>According to the American Farm Bureau, the federal government authorized 384,900 H-2A temporary agriculture visas. The H-2B visa program for temporary non-agricultural workers is\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/working-in-the-united-states\/temporary-workers\/h-2b-non-agricultural-workers\/cap-count-for-h-2b-nonimmigrants\">capped<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0at 66,000 per year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The state\u2019s latest jobs report\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edd.ca.gov\/en\/about_edd\/news_releases_and_announcements\/unemployment-may-2025\/\">found<\/a>\u00a05.3% of Californians, or 1.1 million, were unemployed in May. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The latest federal Bureau of Labor Statistics\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/regions\/west\/news-release\/jobopeningslaborturnover_california.htm\">data<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0on California found there were 659,000 job openings in March 2025, suggesting there may be nearly two unemployed Californians for every open job.<\/p>\n<p>The letter\u2019s signatories included primary author Sen. Suzette Valladares, R-Santa Clarita, along with Sens.
