This infographic, via Visual Capitalist’s Pallavi Rao, <\/a>spotlights the 40 countries that the world perceives to be the \u201cbest.\u201d<\/p>\n

Like most efforts to quantify a qualitative measure, this ranking\u00a0reflects public perceptions<\/strong>, not hard data. However, countries did have to meet certain GDP, tourism, and FDI thresholds to be included in the race.<\/p>\n

Data for this infographic is sourced from\u00a0U.S. News & World Report<\/a>\u00a0in partnership with Wharton and WPP. They asked more than 17,000 people to judge 87 nations across 73 attributes grouped in 10 subrankings.<\/em><\/p>\n

Survey respondents ranked Switzerland highly for business (#2), quality of life (#3), social purpose (#7) and cultural influence (#8).<\/p>\n

For the hard data enthusiasts, Switzerland ranks\u00a0third by GDP per capita<\/a>, ($105,000), boosted by its enormous banking sector known for its secrecy.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s fourth by\u00a0GNI per capita<\/a>\u00a0($95,070), which removes the effects of outside financial flows entering the country.<\/p>\n

Economic Might Still Matters<\/h2>\n

However,\u00a0Japan<\/strong>\u00a0(#2) and\u00a0the U.S.<\/strong>\u00a0(#3) remain fixtures near the top thanks to their outsized GDPs, deep innovation pipelines and global brands.<\/p>\n

Business friendliness weighed heavily: they\u2019re top five for entrepreneurship, while the U.S. ranks #1 for agility and power.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, high investor confidence and\u00a0strong currency reserves<\/a>\u00a0help each nation offset middling scores on cost of living and income equality.<\/p>\n

Together they illustrate how sheer economic heft continues to sway public perception\u2014even in an era generally more focused on sustainability and social values.<\/p>\n

Middle East and Asia Make Inroads in Global Perceptions<\/h2>\n

The\u00a0UAE<\/strong>\u00a0(#17),\u00a0Qatar<\/strong>\u00a0(#25) and\u00a0Saudi Arabia<\/strong>\u00a0(#32) showcase the Middle East\u2019s growing soft-power ambitions.<\/p>\n

Targeted investment in tourism, green energy, and cultural projects burnishes their brand beyond the somewhat disparaging \u201cpetro-state\u201d label.<\/p>\n

Likewise,\u00a0South Korea<\/strong>\u00a0(#18),\u00a0Singapore<\/strong>\u00a0(#14) and\u00a0China<\/strong>\u00a0(#16) leverage\u00a0advanced manufacturing<\/a>\u00a0and technological prowess to climb the ranking.<\/p>\n

Their rise hints at a more multipolar world where Western dominance over \u201cbest country\u201d narratives is steadily eroding.<\/p>\n

Determining the \u201cBest Countries\u201d in the World<\/h2>\n

U.S. News designed its \u201cBest Countries\u201d ranking around 73 attributes grouped into 10 thematic subrankings, such as quality of life, power, and entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n

To reiterate, these rankings\u00a0reflect public perceptions<\/strong>, not hard data. To gather this, the survey is distributed globally to about 17,000 respondents, including business leaders, informed elites, and general citizens.<\/p>\n

Each participant is shown a random subset of countries (that must meet GDP, tourism, and FDI thresholds) and asked to rate how strongly they associate those countries with each of the 73 attributes.<\/p>\n

These individual attributes are pre-assigned to categories by researchers, and scores are normalized on a 0\u2013100 scale. Category scores are then averaged for each country.<\/p>\n

Finally, respondents also rank\u00a0how important each category<\/strong>\u00a0is to them. These rankings determine the weights assigned to each category.<\/p>\n

A country\u2019s final score is calculated by combining its weighted category scores, producing the overall rankings seen in this graphic.<\/p>\n
