Putin Defends Iran’s Right To Nuclear Enrichment In First Macron Phone Call In 3 Years<\/span><\/p>\n

On Tuesday Russian President Vladimir Putin and French President Emmanuel Macron spoke by phone for the first time in almost three years, at a moment of various global hotspots of interest to both countries.<\/p>\n

A nearly two week war between Iran and Israel just ensued last month, at the end of which the US launched a major bombing campaign on three Iranian nuclear facilities. And the Ukraine war shows no ending in sight, with both sides refusing to make concessions. However, just this week the Trump administration confirmed that some weapons shipments to Kiev have been halted<\/p>\n

A big question which lingers over Mideast tensions is the future of Iran’s nuclear program<\/strong>. The White House’s claim that the Islamic Republic’s nuclear capability has been destroyed remains anything but certain or settled. Notably, Putin in the call defended Iran’s ability and sovereign right to purse a peaceful nuclear energy program<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

In the meantime, Tehran has halted cooperation with the UN’s nuclear watchdog IAEA, with the Iranian president having signed this move into law on Wednesday, also amid outrage that its chief Raphael Grossi refused to condemn Israel and US aggression against Iran.<\/p>\n

Following the call, the Kremlin issued an official statement summarizing the conversation between Presidents Macron and Putin.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Vladimir Putin and\u00a0Emmanuel Macron emphasized that Russia and\u00a0France, as\u00a0permanent members of\u00a0the\u00a0United Nations Security Council, bore particular responsibility for\u00a0upholding peace and\u00a0security, in\u00a0the\u00a0Middle East\u00a0and elsewhere, as\u00a0well as\u00a0for\u00a0preserving the\u00a0global non-proliferation regime.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0this regard, it was noted that respecting Tehran\u2019s legitimate right to\u00a0develop peaceful nuclear technology<\/strong> and\u00a0continue to fulfill its obligations under the\u00a0Treaty on\u00a0the\u00a0Non-Proliferation of\u00a0Nuclear Weapons, which includes cooperating with the\u00a0IAEA, was crucial.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0two leaders spoke in\u00a0favor of\u00a0settling the\u00a0crisis around Iran\u2019s nuclear program and\u00a0any other differences arising in\u00a0the\u00a0Middle East exclusively via political and\u00a0diplomatic means. They agreed to\u00a0maintain contact in\u00a0order to\u00a0coordinate their stances if necessary.<\/p>\n

When discussing the\u00a0situation surrounding Ukraine, Vladimir Putin reiterated that the conflict was a\u00a0direct consequence of\u00a0the\u00a0policies pursued by\u00a0the\u00a0Western countries, which had for\u00a0years been ignoring Russia\u2019s security interests, creating an\u00a0anti-Russia staging ground in the country, and\u00a0condoning violations of\u00a0rights of\u00a0Ukraine\u2019s Russian-speaking citizens<\/strong>, and\u00a0at\u00a0present were pursuing a\u00a0policy of\u00a0prolonging hostilities by supplying the\u00a0Kiev regime with a\u00a0variety of\u00a0modern weaponry<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
